GPGPU is one of those trendy buzz-words that gets thrown around a lot these days ... and for good reason. With the latest GPUs, the potential for accelerating a large array of algorithms is rather staggering. However, in order to tap into the parallel processing muscle of a GPU, proper tools are needed - and so we have arrived at today's topic.

Neeeeto .

I found a typo, second page first paragraph:

The mainstream “proof-of-concept” will be the updated AVIVO Video Converter. Now, this application has been with us for quite a while, but up until now it was solely a very optimized CPU-based SD-video encoder. Its December release takes the plunge and leverages HD4xxx cards in order to do up to 17X faster encoding (see the attached presentation for details), whilst also adding support for HD Formats. Since it's also free, it's probably going to get a lot of people interested in what a GPU can bring to the table, beyond rendering Crysis of FarCry 2.

I foresee the 10th of December the Internet will slow down by 500% due to massive downloads... lol! Probably it will stay like that for 2-3 days until most people have downloaded the updated drivers and applications.
Tom's hardware was right but that it is very interesting that in their comparison they used an Intel CPU and one of the most powerful in the mainstream market!... hmmm... makes you wonder why they did not use a Barcelona or Shangai..

Why PhysX when they are been support Havok for a very long time? But I think maybe it would be great if ATI get both PhysX and Havok support. Isn't it?

For one, Havoks GPU offload is nothing like the now dead "HavokFX" by the sound of it.
Secondly, its been put on ice last I heard.
So Havok will stay CPU driven for now afaik. (perhaps not suprisingly as they´re owned by Intel, maybe when Larrabee is out)

That it would.
Anyone know if they ARE working on PhysX support?

Hmm...I think that the interview with Eric, and slide 8 tend to answer that question rather conclusively

So, no, then. We've got to wait for Havok to become aware of GPU's for acceleration.

It´s really nice to see OpenCL moving ahead, having to concider API support when choosing you´r hardware isnt fun, specially when its most on how "promising" it looks for when things start to catch on for real.
And those benches seems to show how well adapted AMDs design choices are at GP computing.
Its good to see AMD making some moves in this field, NV have been making alot of spash with CUDA for a while now.

If they're supposedly opening up Stream Computing to R6xx & above, then why only Transcoding on 4xxx GPUs ?

What I would do to have Avisynth, MVTools, MCBob, etc.. running on the GPU.

Integer bitshift capability has been added to each ALU in the 4XXX series, on prior GPUs only the fat ALU that handled transcedentals could also do int bit shifts. This is important for video encoding, so performance would not be so good on the 2xxx/3xxx series compared to the 4xxx. That being said, AVIVO should support GPU acceleration on those GPUs at some point in the future, once work on the 4XXX is nicely rounded up.

i.e when the HD5000 series is launched, and they can consider dropping including the HD2000/3000 series and state they have a large enough user base with hd4000 and hd5000 sales

/cyncism

I'd like to see it enabled for all as soon as possible. I'm excited to see the performance difference of my HD4850 transcoding a DVD vs. my 3Ghz Quad.

Now that Nvidia suport Physx on Gforce 8, 9 and Gxxx, there are alot of used PCI cards from Ageia, that Nvidia Boys don´t need.

I bought one of this BFG cards(with one year warranty left) for 40€, and now i have an ATI System with Physx.

I can put the card in my PCI slot that i have in my Mobo.

The nly Ageia Cards the are PCI-E are the ones made by asus (that have pci also), but i don´t know if they are still selling this type of cards.

Yes, like it!
I like also to have the best of two worlds.

If nvidia physx don´t have a future, i don´t lose mutch.(40€)

And there are a list of a few good games with the support of Physx at present day.

I Love ati Card´s but i´m not a Fanatic.

I can see the good things in Nvidia, even if i choose to buy an Ati card.

I watched ebay prices of physX cards for a while, they were $50-$70 for a PCI, higher for a PCIe, and $110 for a PCIe refurb. Seemed high to me.

On a slightly related note, I got the PhysX unreal tournament 3 maps running on my system (without hardware acceleration) - see here
