In our latest review, we take a look at a couple boards sporting AMD's new 790GX chipset. Watching paint dry is just as engaging as reviewing motherboards! This isn't because the chipset guys are less talented, nor is it because the motherboard isn't an important part of any system ... no, it's because motherboards work as intended with annoying frequency. Will this hold true for 790GX based motherboards? Review: State of the Union - AMD 790GX Chipset Review

I'm getting pretty good data rates (approaching 100MB/s) using RAID 5 on a Asus M3A79-T, which while not a 790GX, it does use the SB750. I've been pretty pleased with the performance so far with that With the Gigabyte 790GP-DS4H I'm using RAID 1, and it performs almost identically to the SB700, which was around 80MB/s. I've not used RAID 0 on any board with the SB750, nor have I tried RAID 5 with the gigabyte 790GX board. All in all, as the drivers improve, things seem to be slightly improving BTW, this was measured with both Everest and HDTune in Vista 32bit. They are remarkably similar in results

Gotta disagree with the opening statement. An alarming number of mobos do not work as advertised. For example, I own an Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe mobo and those suffer from silent data corruption when entering S3 sleep mode under Vista x64 with 4GB of RAM and certain combinations of hardware. So when buying a motherboard, always google, and always search several online forums to find out about stuff like that. There are other examples of problems that only appear under certain configurations or after a certain amount of time. Some boards have bridge chips that overheat and there's of course also the deaths of budget mobos when paired with 125/140W CPUs mentioned in the article. But a good article nevertheless ![]()
