Default 4870 Safe Operating Temperatures?

I have an ATI 4870. When I play COD4 recently, consistently I'll get to a point where my FPS starts to drop, and things get unplayable. The Catalyst Control Panel says my GPU is at 78-79 degrees C. Is that a safe operating temperature, or a I potentially running too hot?

104C is the maximum safe temperature according to AMD/ATI.

Is it possible it's still losing performance at that temperature? Maybe it's my CPU not GPU. Any suggestions on trouble shooting this?

If your running 8X FSAA at 1920X1200 and outdoors I have seen frames drop low and then rebound it is not a result of the GPU throttling down.

I have the graphics turned up, but it's not a matter of it dipping. Because it just drops and stays dropped. I can play for like 10-20 minutes, and then it just drops to below 5 FPS and locks up and starts up. It gets completely unplayable.

I'm confused though, because I played today for an hour with no problems. I want to figure out whats happening here.

Sounds more like a VPU recovery event rather than anything else. Normally caused by an unstable system, either lack of voltage, too much heat or overclocking related or some other hardware failure from a system run out of specification.

Your system specs would be helpful.
