ATI Technologies ATi HD4850 RV770 - An Architectural Overview - Rage3D Article

RV770 Launch Day is here! Join Rage3D for the first in our series of Launch Day articles: ATi HD4850 RV770 - An Architectural Overview

As an opener to our launch day coverage, we'll be taking a plunge into the RV770 and seeing what what is new, what has changed, what stays the same (quickie note: not much) and how it all fits together. We'll also check and see if we can actually achieve the theoretical numbers using a number of synthetic tests ... don't worry, the whole gaming enchilada will soon follow, we haven't lost our focus.

Writing is improving -- to actually enjoy a technical read is hard to pull off, thanks!

Great writeup!

Now, the next step is to quantify your Hyperlight results with Bit-Tech's GT200 tests, considering the RV770 is not the only chip to improve in this situation (but the 670 was quite competent in this segment anyway)

The RBEs and ALUs definitely look like solid work. (The new "bus" however, does not look like a crossbar either) Sideport CF is something I'd like to see touched heavily in the future.

Oh, and thanks MUCH again!

It's faster at GS, at least by the numbers I've seen. Once I get a GT200 I'll be able to tell you for sure.

The mem-bus is what i said it is. We'll be looking at it more in-depth once the 4870 gets here, as it's one of the juiciest morcels in the RV770.

One little correction on a misconception: The design and architecture teams for the 770 are the same as the 600. There is no seperate "xenos" design team.

I worded that badly, as I understand that pretty much all of your offices were involved. But Orlando was at the forefront for this one, and they were also at the forefront of Xenos so that was the connection. If it's still an incorrect interpretation I'll adjust it.

Nice to see a "perfect storm" but in a positive sense!

Orlando were at the forefront to lead the design teams (and thanks to Scott as the chip lead), but all the designers from R600 participated in the 770, in mainly the same way as they did on R600. No new team was brought on.

I think the biggest surprise was the over all densisty of the chip as compared to RV670.

A quick question, was their any changes to the ultra threaded shader dispatcher? Are each SIMD still set up with dual arbitars/sequencers like R600?

Great article Rage3D, it looks like you burned the candle on both ends to get that one done. Incedible Detail. Thanks for the time and effort.

Hey sireric. Big Congrats to you and the team on the on the success of the HD4800 Series. I was wondering if you could comment on the possibility of built-in fan control for the CCC that Sound_Card had mentioned in another thread and when we can expect to see it? Please?
