Default problem copying large files to external HD

why is it that when i am trying to copy a 5gb file to a 500gb external HD (w/ more than 50% free space) i get an error saying:
"the file is too large for the destination file system"

quite annoying

appreciate the help

Btw... the average cruising airspeed velocity of an unladen European Swallow is roughly 11 meters per second, or 24 miles an hour.

If you don't want to reformat that HDD, you could always pack it into a split rar file. (Uncompressed too)
