HANNOVER, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AMD (NYSE: AMD - News) demonstrated at the CeBIT electronics exhibition its first 45nm quad-core chips running multiple operating systems and a range of processing intensive applications. The processors were produced in Dresden, Germany, in AMD’s Fab 36 300mm manufacturing facility, using an advanced 45nm process co-developed with IBM. AMD 45nm transistors are engineered to enable greater performance-per-watt capabilities in AMD processors and platforms. AMD combines new processes and materials with leading edge technologies, such as immersion lithography and AMD’s fourth-generation strained silicon, for a highly-manufacturable, highly-efficient production process. This is a surprised for me, good news as well. How long before we see actual shipments in large enough quantities is the real question I would have. Plus if any actual improvements to the core have been done to compete against Intel next generation of cores. |

For the 45nm each core keeps the same 512 KB L2 cache, but the L3 cache is expanded to 6 MB up from the 65nm 3 MB

That`s good news for AMD, hopefully they can have a descent run and start executing like they need too. |

That's for first-gen Phenoms. After that they hope to introduce 1MB L2 per core, which might help too- K8 and K10 should perform differently in this aspect. |
