Unhappy Windows 2000 Support?

Looks like the last Catalyst that works with Windows 2000 without hacking is 7.4.

I bet I could 7.6 to work with Windows 2000 if I hack the inf file. Anyone try this already?

I find the "XP only" trend a little troubling, especially to applications. I find that 99% of the "XP only" apps work just fine in 2000 (and even 98!). Just laziness of the testers I guess - can't be bothered to test on more than one OS.

Using the 7.6's here under Win2k. Before installing I compared drivers with a previous Win2K compatible version then modified the 7.6's accordingly.
It's pretty disgusting for ATI, in an agreement with Microsoft, to cease support of Windows 2000.

Lightbulb Windows 2000 Patch Utility

Edit: OMG I fail...

My first post here after 3 years sure didn't come with much luck :-)
First I thought I couldn't post at all (neither topic nor reply) then I msg'd a mod who fixed it so I posted here and now one of my 'lost' topics pops up in the thread index...

Anyway, here's the now appeared thread which contains a solution to the problem:

If Microsoft no longer want to "support" Windows 2000, that's one thing (users can just continue to use it 'unsupported').

But if it is true that Microsoft have forced ATI to prevent new drivers from working on Windows 2000, then that is absolutely f***ing outrageous.

Has anybody been successful in getting the latest Catalyst drivers working in Windows 2000? Every version since Catalyst 7.12 crashes for me (the Catalyst Control Center that is). On a similar note, anybody gotten a recent TV Wonder, such as the 650 working in Windows 2000? The AVStream driver doesn't seem to work in Windows 2000.

... as long as it's not online. but enough Off Topic; thread is regarding Catalyst drivers working on Windows 2000, not why you are using W2K.

Default Windows 2000 Patch Utility

Hi All

Ok, I'm bumping this thread now, even though it looks like there isn't much interest in the topic.

I made a small tool which patches the newer ATI Catalyst XP 32-Bit drivers to work on Windows 2000 (again). I used it at least on 7.6, 7.7 and 7.9 and the installation worked fine on two different Win2K machines (one even uses a Radeon Mobility).

Just download and extract the tool from the following ZIP file and put the executable and the one required and included DLL into the drivers directory or it's parent directory and run it. If it does not work, try to make sure to start the ConvertCatalysXP-2K.exe from the same directory as the to be patched drivers Setup.exe.

http://www.nukular.ch/ConvertCatalysXP-2K.zip

The tool was written in Perl and the source code is included for those who are interested in my ugly code and regexps ;-)

I made a screenshot from my system showing the OS and the driver version:

(sorry for german operating system installation)

Greetings from Switzerland,
Bernhard

All of the 8.* driver files I have are self-extracting and all abort when run in Win2K, so I don't *HAVE* a "Driver Directory" in which the extracted files reside. What tool created AMD's packed file?

His EXE doesn't seem to see the unextracted file

8-2_xp32_dd_58128.exe

and it doesn't know how to do anything with that type file.

Can someone fill in a few blanks here, please?

Thanks

all the catalyst drivers extract to the %windir%\ATI\Support\xxx folder.

I believe 7zip will also rip apart the files as well.

Question I keep getting the same error message, no matter where

The error message says that the convert program can't find the directory, and to make sure that where I start it from is inside of that directory or the parent. I created a Folder "ATI" on a partition apart from where I have an older ATI card and driver installed on the PC I'm using right now, and a "Support" next level under that, and "8-2_xp32_dd_58128" under that, and used 7-zip, since WinZip32 didn't seem to want to do it.

I've tried putting the convert in each of those before starting it, and it's not happy with any of them. Do I need to be running the target system specifically, FIRST, and have the convert program ready to start from within the folder on THAT PC's W2K home partition only?

Default The Convert is still failing --

I've now attempted to convert on the target system as well, and all I can think of is that somehow this tool is limited to working on 7.x versions only.
