Default Valve gives free games to ATI Radeon owners

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39952

DOUG LOMBARDI from Valve just gave us the nod that this game developer/publisher from Seattle reached an agreement with DAAMIT. The cooperation will result in owners of ATI Radeon cards getting some content unlocked.

To be more precise, Half Life 2: Lost Coast tech demo and Half Life 2: Multiplayer are unlocked and free for all the folk with ATI cards carrying "Radeon" moniker. Owners of ATi Radeon HD 2900XT will get that cancelled retail package named Black Box, containing Half Life 2: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

In order to ease the deal, starting from now, ATi Catalyst will come with a bundled installation of Steam. Since Steam is only some 0.6MB in size, it will not increase download by much. This Catalyst+Steam bundling deal will last until mid-2008, but offer for ATI owners will remain – a definite cool move by ATI and Valve folk.

This deal includes all ATI Radeon cards ever produced, so if you own an ATi Radeon card you bought at the time when big bells pants were popular, you can get these two games. While there are still complaints about Steam, one cannot overlook just how easy it is to backup games - a regular nightmare for owners of DRMed games. ATI has been partner with Valve for years, and now - you can expect this relationship to continue in the future.

So how do I get the games? Install STEAM and let it figure out I have a Radeon and voila, they are unlocked?

This may sound strange to some of you, but what if I don't want Steam installed when I update drivers? The games mentioned don't interest me in the least.

I'm hoping that Steam is an optional install and not forced on you. I don't want any part of online controlled game downloads.

I'm sure it will be an optional install. I can't see ATI being crazy enough to force every card owner using Catalyst drivers to install Steam ;D

As for online controlled game downloads... they're free, so how's that a problem? But that's your choice, I'm just curious what bothers you about them.

http://www.steampowered.com/ati_offer1a/

it's only techdemo LC and HL2DM (multiplayer)

but ... IF ... Source mods (like upcoming Insurgency and BlackMesa Source etc) works too ...

then it's definitely interesting free offer ...

still 50% discount on HL2/HL2EP1 worth ...

Not quite good actually... they are more marketing than anything else. HL2:Multiplayer and Lost Coast? Sounds like a demo for people to try the half life series and sell further copies of HL2 and its expansions.

Edit: Not to mention letting people know about STEAM.

It is 100% more to benefit them rather than the costumer. Bah, as always.

Well after YEARS of avoiding Valve content because of bad run ins with snotty nosed kiddies during my CS days I have finally gave in to Valve.

You see although I rate Valve highly I wasnt in the least interested in their games... save and except when I first played HL1 in 1999 and because of that game later playing CS at my local lan zone, where both online and offline I found myself disgusted at the foul mouthed totally ill mannered teens I ended up playing with, I had to literally slap one in the face after he passed his place and both of us got a month ban from the lan zone.

I will just see whats up with this nice offer from Valve, and again I give thanks for sticking with ATi by not buying a 6600GT and getting my X1600pro which has proven itself to be a good card. Looking forward to getting a HD2600XT later this year.

It's just smart business. And it still DOES benefit the customer. The customer still decides whether they actually like STEAM and the games they can purchase/play with it... I personally think STEAM is great anyway. Nothing to complain about here, and there's TONS of games and demos to choose from.

Ha! I bought my 9600XT specifically because it came with a voucher for HL2. Then had to wait about 6 months for the game to actually be released!!

Isn't the Half Life 2: Lost Coast tech demo free for anyone who wants to download it?

Hahaha yes, that is what I mean. It is just to get STEAM into people's computers, nothing more nothing less. It is not "good will" from Valve, at all. It is simply marketing their service (steam) and their game (half life 2).
