nVidia Rage3D GeForce 8-Series Review

I've just published my review of two GeForce 8-Series graphics cards, BFG's 8800 GTX and XFX's 8800 GTS, based on the G80 graphics processing unit. Here's a snip:
Regardless of your foreknowledge of all things G80 I will restate this simple fact of recent history here: on November the 8th NVIDIA released the G80 GPU, what is arguably the biggest advancement in graphics technology since Ernie Coombs invented the pixel in his tickle trunk during his spare time. It does away with so many of the standard conventions of GPU design that the G80 can almost be considered a whole new approach to graphics hardware. It’s akin to the technological leap from piston powered engines to jet engines. Faster, more efficient, and immediately obsoletes everything before it.

I wonder if we'll see Ratchet's performance 'sound bite' in a flash ad, like on the 7900 promo's from NCIX??

AMD

Great review. Thanks.

Can you say AMD/ATI = PWNED?!?! At least for now. Although we all knew it already.

If I was buying a card today. And IF I had that kind of scratch ($450 US). The 8800GTS is an incredible product for the price.

For comparisons sake, the X1950XTX needs to be about $379 now IMO. But lowest I have been seeing is $409. Average $429.

Really too bad ATI will be 3 or so months to answer this.

Great review Mark! The only problem is you've incited a riot within my wallet.

Pawned? Hardly. With R600 still under wraps, the only thing worry for nVidia was living up to expectations, something they accomplished and then some. The only pawnage that might have happened is if the 8800x hadn't manhandled the existing competition.

Sure looking forward to seeing how ATi responds to these monsters. But until then ... there is zero question as to which cards deserve your hard-earned cash!

No riot here.

You need something in the wallet for it to riot.

Great review Ratchet and might I add one of the most professional I have seen on the web.

The G80 really did not pwned ATi just yet. The real proof in the pudding as it were is who runs Crysis best the day it comes out.

The very first DX10 game will be the benchmark for both camps and determines where our cash end up.

AMD

OK. That is only the 2nd time I have used the word pwnd in my life I think. And I get slapped. Hahahaha.

All I meant by pwned is that they out launched ATI again for the 3rd time in 1 and a half years. And no answer in the near future from ATI. So there was a little pwnage there. That's all.

This was without a doubt a 9700Pro class release from nVidia. It cannot be denied and I am an ATI fan saying this.

I am not afraid for AMD/ATI though. I do firmly believe that that will be the last time it happens. AMD is VERY aggressive. Just look at what they managed to do to Intel for the last few years.

If I was to think someone needed to be afraid, it would be nVidia IMO. AMD is one tough customer. ATI has some VERY smart engineers. The combination could be very tough.

Very true. nVidia is first out the gate again, and with a hard launch no less. I have high hopes for the R600, but being behind AND missing the holiday season is disappointing to say the least.

Competition aside, it is always FANTASTIC to see a next-gen product live up to the hype. Here's hoping that it continues to impress even after DX10 games hit the table.

We do not know if it lived up to the hype or not. We will not know untill we see it running some dx10 software.

Another thing: The 9700 was at least as great a leap over anything before it, hell even a great leap over the 5800 that came after it. So stop with the ass kissing please.

If you read the hype, you'd know that it has lived upto it.. Your head would have to be in the sand to not see that..

And the DX10 software was mentioned, and as Lupine said, lets hope it continues to impress duing that time.

I think if you go back and read the reviews you would see that the 9700 Pro wasn't twice as fast as the Ti4600, and it certainly wasn't twice as fast as the FX 5800. It was a leap in progress, for sure, and a legitimate comparison can be made, but as far as performance (and to a lesser extend features) goes it was definitely not as great.

No ass kissing present. The 9700 Pro was my first "big investment" card and it lasted me far longer than any card before or since. One big reason was its proficiency with DX9 based games. In fact, a friend of mine is still running that card quite happily.

Similarly, while I love what I'm seeing w/ the 8800x series (enough so that I plan to invest in one), I cannot speak to its DX10 proficiency until we see those titles hitting the floor. But my expectations are high and, from a design standpoint, I see nothing that leads me to believe that the 8800x series will disappoint.

great review, u still have the best graphing of any review site, more sites should copy your template with a single graph but the ability to switch between settings at the top. so much easier than looking at multiple graphs of the same game.

Ass kissing ?
This was one of the best reviews on the web, period. And, it's on a ATI fansite.

Great review, Ratchet. I've been eyeing up this wonderful card for a long time, and it's now in my next upgrade.

R600, doesn't really interest me. New card, same ATI drivers, and same ATI problems. Fix ****, break ****. Hell, I can't even get DVI working on my X800, as it just goes to sleep.

Hmmm...

I do not have any more issue with my ATI than I do with my nVidia. I think you have ****ty luck or you card is screwed.

BWAHAHAHA....

On a more serious note, I'd say your dvi connector is borked. Why do I speak this....

9700Pro = Dvi fine
9800Pro = dvi fine
9800XT = dvi fine
X700Pro = dvi fine
X800Xt = dvi fine
X1800XL = dual dvi fine

But lets blame ati and their ****ty drivers when we are probably an nvidiot. I've been through more cat drivers on those cards than I care to count.

Disclaimer: I realize this may be taken as a flame post but it is not, unless your some nvidiot trying to slander ati, then I flame you. If not I honestly think you have a hardware problem.

great review but would be even greater if you could have tested it with a C2D proc

Usual bunch of rabid fanboy bullcrap posts.

Yes, lets all blame the borked card, shall we.
How very droll.

If anyone's ass kissing, it's the ATI ass kissing that goes on here.

Pathetic.
Grow the **** up.

Why? The X2/FX is just as good in 3D tests. Read the comparison somewhere on the hardware section.

Anyway, Rage3D is not an ATi fansite anymore, at least not compared to its past. Sure, there still are fierce ATi fans in this board, but not as many as before.
Perhaps that's why most of the ATi employees decided to jump ship.

Nice DHTML use in your review!

Wish the memory on the GTS would have clocked higher for the review though.

Too bad NV can't put out any drivers for the 8800 for Vista to test though.

Methinks we'll see something soon.

Wow, what an INCREDIBLE review. As you reviewed nvidia's latest, you gave credit where credit is due to ATi. Not one slight. Not at all. You called it like it is. Where ATi has been there and done that, you brought that front and center. VERY VERY NICE! Where NVIDIA excels, you brought that to light also, but again, that was mitigated with what ATi has accomplished since the 9700. Very cool.

THIS is how an ATi fansite (I know your site is trying to be agnostic but just go with this for now) reviews cards. THIS is how ATi posts on rage3d again. BRAVO!

Excellent review, well worth the wait. The time and effort Mark put into the review shows.
