Default Volkswagen W12 engine

I was looking into the W-engines VW is producing. The first time I'd heard of a "W" engine, I thought, "Wha...?? Er, that has to be a mistake...that's just !"

Vee-Dub has a history of using rather unconventional engines (boxer 4, squished-together VR V-6 engine), so it would figure they'd produce something like a W engine. But I was having a hard time trying to imagine what on earth a W engine layout looks like. So I hit the 'web to have a look-see. Pretty neat engine, I must say. Looks like an engineering nightmare, but it's still pretty neat; neat enough to have a thread of its own.

The W-12 Looks like it's basically two VR V-6 engines side by side.

Here's a comparo of the VR6 next to a traditional V-6 and I-4 (inline-4) layout:

Thought some of you here would find it interesting.

(I was thinking it would find broader appeal here in Off-Topic instead of Motoring... )

JimmyBoy has it right. They took two VR6 engines, and put them together.

V-Reihenmotor 6 is a great engine all on its own.

The W12 is great as well..

Why should I talk about them..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W16_engine

There is a whole wiki on these engines.

Oh yeah, it's certainly OFN, but I think it's still pretty neat and still new and unique enough that it's not too OFN.
