ATI Technologies Rage3D ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Crossfire Review

We've just published our review of ATI's new Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card. Check it out.
The X1950 Pro is built using the RV570 graphics core which features 256MB of GDDR3 memory, 36 pixel shaders, 8 vertex shaders, and 12 ROPs. To those of you paying attention these specs will look familiar; they are the same as featured with ATI’s X1900 GT graphics card. The RV570 is no chopped down R580 like the X1900 GT uses though, no core that couldn’t quite cut it; the RV570 was designed and built for the X1950 Pro and the mainstream performance segment with purpose and intent.

great review as always!

any idea's why the XF handles FEAR's AA so poorly?
were there any visual differences between the green and red during the SC:CT HDR tests?

Wow. 7900GS pwned mostly across the board in single and double card setups. Wow. I never used the word pwned before.

Great review!

Not sure where I read it but the phtsical release of the card was pushed up from the 17th to the end of the month? This was like 2 days ago it was said. So I imagine that stock will be around more so in another week. So this seems like a 2 week hard launch. But better than the usual.

NCIX with have the ICEQ3 Turbo edition 1st week of November.

Enjoyed the part that offered the scaling aspect of the dual GPU's specifically the GT.

nVidia seems to have a nice advantage with Fear AFR over-all -- specifically the lows and a real noticable difference with the lows. Deeko1976 by upgrading his CPU and over-clocking his CPU virtually doubled his lows in Fear with AFR -- 27 to 52 at 1920 x 1200 with x4 AA. Puzzeld more about the low differential with Fear AFR than anything else when nVidia and ATI are using apple-to-apple CPU's.

Where did you read that the launch was pushed back? This is the first I've heard about that. I will contact ATI PR and ask for clarification/confirmation.

I am looking for it now...

Found it.

""DailyTech has managed to obtain an early sample of ATI’s upcoming Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card. The Radeon X1950 Pro was expected to arrive next week, however ATI has pushed the launch date back to the last week of October.""

It's probably incorrect though.

Ah for ****s sake man, so sorry but I totally screwed up making those charts. The data was almost all wrong.

I've just fixed them now. I have no excuse for not verifying them before I published.

Ok, but the data on that article is a bit old. I've received info since then that still said it was supposed to be a hard launch with same day availability. I've already sent ATI PR an email for confirmation though, no reponse yet.

I notice that if you search for "x1950 pro" it comes up in the listings, but if you search for "x1950pro" you only get the $229 cards. From what I'm told, the $229 prices will drop over the next few weeks to $199 -- that's what's shipping today. The Sapphire card for $199 will start shipping Monday at the latest, but it could be as early as tomorrow.

Bottom line, you can get a card today for $229, and tomorrow they should have stock on the $199.
So looks like pricing is stabilizing already, but it's still not as widely available or priced as accurately as we've grown accustomed to with NVIDIA launches. Hopefully ATI can sort that out for the next launch.

Very nice review as always Ratchet, looks like the X1950 Pro is a good deal and a step forward for CF.

LMAO

this is one funny review to read!!

This type of Crossfire generally required users to connect the two cards using a very annoying external dongle (think three headed anaconda in an early stage of rigor mortis and you’ll have a good idea about the dongle).
Quote:
That damn external dongle was spawned from Hell, I swear. I’m glad to see that its days are numbered.
Quote:
Yeah there are two of them, but who cares; there could be 50 of them covering every inch of the board for all I care. I’m just happy that that cursed external dongle is on the way out. You can’t truly appreciate how much I hate that thing until you have to work with it for hours on end day in and day out benchmarking videocards. I hope we never see anything like that again from anyone.
Someone seems very happy about getting rid of the external dongle. and shows it many times in the review.

Thanx a lot for doing that.
and just so you know, you are not alone;

Again keep in mind that we’re testing the NVIDIA cards with the image quality setting at “High Quality” mode rather than the driver default setting of “Quality”. We’ve noted that the HQ setting significantly reduces the amount of texture shimmering in games such as Battlefield 2. This change does negatively impact NVIDIA’s performance, but it’s a tweak many NVIDIA users seem to be doing with their own cards so we’re doing it too.

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/..._pro/page4.asp

I just don't read any reviews that doesn't include the HQ setting in their review period.

Once again awesome review Ratchet and very well written conclusion part. !!!!

Awesome review.

I have to wonder if the boost in performance from cf isn't because of the fact the composition engines are sitting right on the core. Both cards get them, so its easier for them to balance the load and at the same time cuts out alot of latency. When you have seperate chips.

Nice to see that High Quality filtering was deployed properly.

7900GTX is also thoroughly owned.

Why ATI futzed about all this time before releasing a decent card at $200-250 is a mystery.

Great review Ratchet; I especially liked all the benchmarks you did (the ones I like to look at ...) and the fact you are one of the only reviews to show us pictures in detail of the cooling ...

like ... why didnt any of the other reviews go into as much detail about the cooling - is one of the main things about this board that makes it nice.

And the fact you included a xfire setup and compared it to the 1950xt (which is basically the same price) ...

Cheers!

I'd say force of habit; they're used to doing that

Awesome work, a real review of X1950Pro.
Getting the real benchmarks is hard to come by these days.
Cudos to ya Ratchet.

$200 is no where near the average, or even the mode of the x1950pro. Beyond zip zoom fly, prices range from a low of around $230(allstarshop) up to a max of $350. With an average around $275.

I think this is gonna be the one that gets an ATI board back in my main system (my dear 9700 Pro is in my wife's system - I still love that board).

In the main article, the chart showing gpu specifications has a few mistakes

under the 7900GS. it has 16 ROPs, not 12. also it has 20 TMUs so multiplied

by 450MHz it has a texel fill of 9000 Mtexels/sec. Just sayin...

Check my system specs tab if it interests you.

Thanks a bunch Ratchet. I bought the Sapphire 1950 Pro based largely on this article. It hit the sweet-spot of performance/price for me until R600 or I break down and sail the nV ship for a while. For those interested I got it for CA$237.

Like was said before, I like your writing style. Keepin' it real brutha!

The price went up! Score!

A buddy has his own business so he got it for me at the dealer price (the bulk x10 price).
