Default X server hangs with blank screen when DRI is active

My system: Radeon 9600Pro, Epox 8KHA+ board, Athlon XP CPU, SUSE 10.0

Yesterday I plugged in a second hard disk to copy my system to my girlfriend's PC. After removing it again and shutting down my X server does not start anymore.
It hangs after (II) fglrx(0): [DRI] installation complete with 100% CPU load. When killing the X server the whole system stops completely. No num lock key or network anymore. Using no_dri "yes" the X server starts normally.
Nothing on the system changed from yesterday. No kernel or BIOS updates or changes. I just removed the second hard disk.

I now tried nearly everything. Different fglrx versions, the radeon driver, BIOS settings, IRQ settings, using another monitor both with DVI-D and VGA cabling. Even when I put the card in her PC it has the same problems (with my copied system). Tried to install a fresh SUSE 9.3 on another drive on my PC, but same there as soon as I install the fglrx drivers, so it can be neither my OS, nor my BIOS that's at fault here.

But the card works perfectly on my girlfriend's PC under Windows XP. Could run 3DMark03 without problems, so the hardware should be ok, either.

I now completely ran out of ideas. Never had such problems before. Could run FlightGear and enjoy at least a little 3d acceleration (as much as the drivers permit...). Any help or advice appreciated greatly.

My Xorg.0.log of the hanging server:

Have you checked all electrical connections ?. I mean you said you plugged in a new hardddisk, and removed it afterward, maybe you also hit some cables or pci-cards and they now dont have the full connection needed (hope you what i mean, lol). I had this once, it took me three hours to find out, that an expansion card was not really fitting in its slot and thus causing random reboots. Also check if the ram-modules are sitting right and if all fans are running.

cheers Jon

It was indeed a mechanical problem. Removed the zalman passive cooler and noticed three of four corners broken. Must have been a wonder that the card even worked so long.

Have now bought an nvidia card so I will be able to compare driver improvements directly cause of the radeon I still have in my notebook. My first impression: nvidia is also not the holy grail, but they are not bad.
