Heya... This month's issue of Maximum PC mag front cover had the feature "Dual everything!" Dual core opterons+ dual socket dual video - sli dual sata - raid hd.. etc... I didnt buy the magazine, just picked it up and glanced at the cover for a minute while browsing rest of the magazine rack... I dunno. Sounds cool yet just a tad extreme for the average person? Server environment I could see it, that for all purposes would be a "quad core/cpu" rig wouldn't it? I remember the old days of a quad Pentium Pro server box... Btw, dual core opterons are out now, and are expensive, canadian prices @ AMD Opteron 270 Dual Core 2 GHz Socket 940 2MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) - $1,379.00 per cpu... If anything, sounds interesting for at least a "quad" setup for the amd server markets / applications Just a little overkill & extreme for everyone else aint it? ![]() Whats your opinions? ![]()

the problem with doing this is that the dual core opterons are so much much more than their counterpart x2 dual core chips.(think 350 vs 800 and the 800 is slower clockwise) it's not even funny at the difference in prices. i just wished we had a dual board capable of running two x2s because it would save at least 50 percent of cost.

If we did, then amd would effectively be shooting itself in the foot - nobody would go dual opterons route when x2's are so much cheaper. that happened way back in the slot1 pentium 2 / celeron 300a era. people bought the dual slot1 boards and plopped dual celeron300a's in them instead of the more pricier full-cache Pentium2 300's. The company i worked for did that for their own multi server revamps, as well as sold servers in those configurations for much cheaper than the proper dual P2-300 combinations (must've been a major hommer simpson "DOH!" moment for intel marketing & development departments)Unless you can fit a regular A65 onto a opteron board, somehow i think AMD cut short this potential (or marketing disaster). Opterons - socket 940. A64 socket 939.
