nVidia Rage3D NVIDIA GeForce 7800GTX Review

I've published my review of NVIDIA's GeForce 7800GTX PCI-Express graphics card. That's right; an nVidia review on Rage3D. When you wake up from the shock of that, click here to read it.
While the battle between nVidia's 6-series and ATI's X-series was often bloody, brutal, and sometimes downright ugly, it reached a clear conclusion when nVidia launched the 7800GTX onto the battlefield. No more is it 6800 vs. X800, it's now 7800 vs. X800 and as you'll see in this review, that's a battle ATI has no chance to win.

Rage3d turns to the dark side!

Great review Ratchet. I really like how you used 16xAF instead of 8x which most reviewers use.

Yeah, I'm thinking bandwidth limited. Either that or pixel limited (only 16 rops). I'm pretty sure that in time the gap between the X850XT and the 7800GTX will grow. Drivers will mature and games that take advantage of the added shader power will be released.

Great work Ratchet! But, this is blasphemy, hehe... you going to be an nVidiot from now on? Hehe =D.

Great review! But I must agree, HDR could have been included. But it sorta is, isn't it? In SC:CT with SM3.0 enabled, doesn't it have HDR?

Anyways, great read! I really like how you can easily change the view of one graph, instead of having pages on pages with graphs!

Can't wait for the R520 =D

CPU limited and vertex limited. Thats why the X700pro beats out a 6600GT in higher rez, even in doom 3

Clearly ATI wasn't ready for this new tactic. Their R520 wasn't ready to anywhere near that degree, and they obviously couldn't respond to a hard-launch with a paper-launch. So while ATI fights to finish the R520 and get a sufficient supply on hand for a hard-launch of their own, nVidia enjoys zero competition in an industry that thrives on marketing and mindshare.
We better hear something tommarow It might just be crossfire launch

I only have the 7800GTX and a 6600GT on hand (no 6800 class cards) so I couldn't do any SM3.0 performance comparisons (such as HDR). If you guys want to see the 7800GTX with and without HDR or any other sort of "with/without" test then I can do it easy enough, but I have to send the card back soon.

Thumbs down

I have a 7800 GTX myself but I don't think R3D should be doing nVidia hardware reviews - I just don't think it fits well within the scope of this site being called Rage3D and all. But whatever do what you want, just makes the site seem more generic to me like millions of others out there. Other than that, nice review.

Thumbs up Great Work!!

I'm thinking about picking up a new graphics card, my Radeon 9800 Pro just doesn't cut it anymore and this review was VERY helpful. Not only was it helpful but it was also a great way to keep an eye on the competition

great review, Ratchet. The new 77.76 drivers fixed a few issues I had with my 7800GTX and I don't miss my X800XT too much . Hopefully ATI can release R520 to force NV to lower prices and I hope they have good competition with each other (I hate the fact of $600 cards MSRP period, and BFG are already talking about $1000 cards in interviews)

I knew someone would bring that up.

The fact is we are a fansite and always will be, we've never tried to hide that from anyone, but then I think it's better for us -as a fansite- to have an open view of the industry rather than have the blinders on at all times.

If there are people that want to bury their heads in the sand then that's fine, you don't need to read anything that you object to and you're entitled to your views and opinions just as much as I am, but finally getting the opportunity to check out nVidia hardware is great for us. I just hope that I can get more stuff in the future.

Personally I don't care who makes the hardware, all I care about is if it kicks ass or not.

Hey Ben, long time no talk.

I never had any issues with the 77.72s personally but I did hear there were some problems with them. Irregardles, I wanted to stick to the WHQLs for the review.

I agree about the pricing thing, it's getting pretty ridiculous (though not nearly as bad as CPUs... yet). I guess as long as there are enough people out there willing to pay that much for a top-end card then both NV and ATI will keep pricing them that high.

It may be a fan site but we know rage3d doesn't get any level of support from anyone specific unlike other sites. I don't see Rage3D brought to you by ATI anywhere on this site. It may be a fansite but I don't think i've ever seen where it was strictly ATI based. This was a review that needed to be done by someone, and since you guys now declared it an ATI fan site it lends a little more credence to the review itself.

Don't worry about the naysayers, this review needed to be done, you owe loyalty to neither. It's not your fault ATI hasn't released anything earth shattering to review yet, they will, the only question is when, no one but ATI knows for sure and it's a closely guarded secret apperantly.

I would rather see more reviews like this from an unexpected source rather than one that pledges allegiance to any single manufacturer.
It doesn't make the site more generic but it does make it seem well rounded

and besides Joker he won't take anyone away from nvnews.

Thanks. I would have liked to use lossless PNGs but the filesizes would have been over 1MB each, too big for the site to handle.

I considered using cropped PNGs that just focused on the relevant parts of the image, but I felt that showing the entire screen was more important. It's not ideal, but those JPGs are fairly high quality (85 of 100 on the Photoshop scale) and they serve the purpose I think.

If I get serious complaints I can provide the uncompessed BMPs or PNG24s.
