Here's one to add:

SyncBack (freeware version)

"SyncBack is our multi-award winning freeware program that helps you easily backup and synchronise your files to: the same drive; a different drive or medium (CDRW, CompactFlash, etc); an FTP server; a Network; or a Zip archive."

In my own words, it gives you a slew of options regarding copying only updated files vs. all files, and all sorts of variants (such as what to do when a file exists in the destination, but not the source). It also offers comprehensive reports after a copying session completes. I personally use it to regularly copy all updated/new files in specific directories to an external drive (My Documents, bookmarks, e-mail, etc.).

Nasty program... Openoffice is lightyears ahead of this program. Their photo editor is interesting though.

Default Cygwin notes

I am glad to see Cygwin made your list.

This is one of the most useful packages out there.
Cygwin is not just a utility. It really is an effort to bring the Linux GNU tools to Windows.

I currently I have 1.63 GB (1,759,279,765 bytes) of Cygwin tools installed.
Best of all it's all free.

Highlights

* Bash command shell
* GNU C++ Compiler, DDD debugger
* OpenSSH
* "X" Windows

There are programs that will run under Linux that will not run under Cygwin, but there are thousands of programs that run under both!

Many programs can be found here.

http://freshmeat.net/

Let's try one:

http://freshmeat.net/projects/ifstat/
ifstat - Stable branch

about:
ifstat is a tool to report network interface bandwith just like vmstat/iostat do for other system counters. It can monitor local interfaces by polling the kernel counters, or remote hosts' interfaces using SNMP.

Homepage:
http://gael.roualland.free.fr/ifstat/
Tar/GZ:
http://gael.roualland.free.fr/ifstat/ifstat-1.1.tar.gz

Click on the Tar/GZ file and save to disk.

So we have a new program.
Lets try it.

Pretty cool stuff.

Now just remember this is just one example, there are thousands of programs out there that will run under cygwin using the same technique.

1.) Download tar ball
"<filename.tar.gz>" or "<filename.tar.bz2".

2.) Untar the ball.
"tar zxf <filename.tar.gz" or "tar jxf <filename.tar.bz2".

3.) Change to directory.
"cd <dir-name>"

4.) Read the readme file.
"less README"

5.) Config for system.
"./configure"

6.) Make the program.
"make"

7.) Install the program.
"make install"

8.) Run the program.
<program_name>

If you want to gain access to programs that normally run under Linux.
If you want to learn to program and need a good "C++" compiler.

/* Example C++ program with dialog box */

#include <windows.h>

int WinMain(HINSTANCE,HINSTANCE,LPSTR,int)
{
MessageBox(0,"Hello, Windows","Cygwin Test Program",MB_OK);
return 0;
}

# compile it
$ g++ hello.cpp -o hello

# Run it
$ ./hello

When you run the above program you will get a nice small dialog box.

Did I say that you can download CSHARP compiler too?

It's a spreadsheet program that rivals the PoS that is included with openoffice. I am satisfied with it

Recommended update to post #1:

For AVG, change the URL to: http://free.grisoft.com

Grisoft has made it unusually tricky to navigate from their main site to the pages hosting their freeware antivirus software. The updated link will save people considerable time.

Found another "Best Freeware" list. If you scroll down, you'll see that they provide a significant amount of detail regarding each piece of software.

For fans of the Celestia genre, which I'm pleased to find in this list you may want to try out Stellarium, which is more like a 3D OpenGL intensive planetarium software, quite useful for real time stargazing, and with a "night" mode too (so that you can pull out your laptop at night and not damage your night vision).

http://www.stellarium.org/

And it has many bonus features.
