http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33800697 Me and a few people in the thread above are trying to fix the random freeze problem. The symptom is the following. 1. Mouse is moveable but not responding to any action 2. SSH-able 3. Killing X makes the system completely freeze I wonder if this problem is common among the Radeon user with ATI FGL driver installed. Some cards that have been reported to have this problem is 1. Radeon 9500Pro/9700Pro 2. Radeon 9000 Mobility 3. Radeon 9200SE 4. Radeon 8500 5. Saphire X800-XT/PE 6. Radeon 9550 If you don't have this problem, could you please describe your graphic card model and the manufacture?

I have just 9200 (not SE) and my machine freeze almost every day (mainly when browsing web in opera), so please add this card in list. I've discover several reliable methods to reproduce a crash, see them here. Also, it seems we figured out that lockups occur only on pre-r350 models, right? It's possible that these freezes are not all connected, I'd just point out. Now, with the new drivers, my machine hasn't frozen at all, except when I first installed it - I ran glxgears, got a segfault, ran it again, and got a black-screen hard-lock. Anywho, I did use to get them under hard load, e.g. 3D games, but quite infrequently. I found upping AGP/Vcore voltage in the BIOS helped alleviate, if not cure, the problem. I own X800XT PE and have zero problems with it so far. I love it. My 9700 pro had some problems with stutter but seemed to go away on a driver update. Quote:

WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.11.4-21.9/Module.symvers is missing; modules will have no modversions. now the last error I'm getting was: Code:
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.6.11.4-21.9-default/extra/; cp /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx/fglrx.ko /lib/modules/2.6.11.4-21.9-default/extra/ I'm stumped.. I don't really want to have to switch distros just because of this.. help! -MD |

I haven't experienced freezes lately (I used to) but I've mostly been using the open-source driver lately so there hasn't really been much testing either. |

I do not have the random freeze. Card: ATI (oem) Radeon 9500 Pro Motherboard: Intel PESVl External AGP FSAA: Off I used to have hanging issues, and then I turned off FSAA (I didn't just change the level, and I didn't just set the level to 0 -- those didn't fix it, I set the FSAAEnable thing to No). |

brsett, which chipset does that intel board have? I have FSAAEnable set to No so that does not appear to be the answer. Is it me or the majority of people reporting here without the problem have AMD chips?

Intel says its an 845PE, lspci seems to indicate its an 845G. Either way, one of the run of the mill 478 pin 845 chipsets. Nothing fancy whatsoever. Honestly, if you suspect the bug is with intel chip hardware, I think you are barking up the wrong tree (Intel ain't Via or Nforce or any of that other crap). Most people stupid enough to run ATI video cards in Linux are probably dumb enough to use nforce or via based mobo's I guess too . I'll be happy to tell you anything you want to know about my machine though. It's gentoo Linux P4 2.4GHz (B edition). I've been running the silly fglrx drivers since roughly version 2.8.0. They finally released a stable driver in Feb, and that's what I'll be running until they fix the stupid bug that won't let me stop and restart X. Here's the bridge Ids: 0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE Host-to-AGP Bridge (rev 02) 0000:00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 82) 0 Last edited by brsett : Apr 9, 2005 at 12:14 AM. |

No I don't necessarily think its a bug with Intel chip hardware. It was just that for whatever reason more people here with AMD chipsets were reporting that they did not have a problem. Also Intels without the i875p chipset don't seem to be reported to have the problem as much. That said I could be seeing a pattern that no one else is. Even mtippett doesn't seem to know the answer to our problem.

I have had this problem exactly as described above. None of the countless tips and tricks I tried would help. None of the fglrx drivers did help. I think I've done almost anything regarding the software. Months and driver versions went by. Only about a month ago, I decided to install better cooling equipment for my case, the CPU and the GPU (I replaced the fan on the GPU with a more efficient one and made sure it blows down on the cooler). Now my CPU never goes beyond 60°C, my motherboard rarely beyond 35°C and inside my case there's 25°C at max. I haven't measured the temperature of the GPU but it's definitely much cooler now. Considering the heat differences seen with the other parts, I'd estimate it should have about 5 to 10°C less than before. Since then I've never experienced a freeze anymore. I was astonished. A thermal problem? I couldn't believe it so I switched of the extra cooling - the freezes came back. I turned the extra cooling on again - freezes are gone. Next I tried older drivers which triggered the freezing more often - none at all. It simply worked. Apart from the freezes there was nothing that would have made me suspicious about thermal problems. As I said, about a month has passed and I haven't suffered from any freezes. I know this sounds unlikely and if I were you, I wouldn't be likely to believe myself, but for me this helped. Nothing else would. Good luck if you try to do the same. It helped me, YMMV. Radeon 9500 Pro AMD Athlon 2800+ Last edited by Philantrop : Apr 9, 2005 at 12:59 PM. Reason: Corrected typos. |

Well I don't seem to be having a thermal problem, but since that would cause freezes I would suggest others with this problem to make sure their system is cool enough.

Buying a temperature sensor to be installed on the GPU is also not practical for most of us. We might try to reduce the clock and see if the temperature is the problem or not.

Unfortunately it did not have any effect on "the freeze". system kept locking up as usual.I also tested AGP voltage increase and also with no avail. changing AGP from 8 to 4 is going to be my next step, although I have no idea how to do it in Linux. I did not find it in BIOS setup, but I know how to do it in Windoz.

clutch110, what CPU and motherboard are you running? foxy123, thats a nice cooling setup there too bad it didn't solve the problem. As for changing the AGP from 8x to 4x, there might be an advanced BIOS mode that you will have to use like I had to.

[fglrx] AGP enabled, AgpCommand = 0x1f004312 (selected caps) My last number is 2h which is 0010 (AGP 8x) in binary. Then you mask with 3h which is 0011 to get 0001 which telling the driver to run AGP at 4x. So put this in your X config Option "AGPMask" "0x00000003" Option "AGPv3Mask" "0x00000003" The next time you load the driver, you're expecting the last digit to be 1. I heard people saying that running the data rate at 4x doesn't help either. You may try. It seems that every person has their own solution. Does anyone try to install their card in the different box which has completely different hardware? Does anyone that don't have this problem try to install their card with a compeltely different hardware and experiencing this problem?

To find some nice frontends for it, go to http://freshmeat.net and search for "lm_sensors". As for changing the AGP mode: In many cases the hardware will ignore the setting specified by "AGPMask" (or the "v3" variant). But at least it's honest enough to tell you that via syslog. Code:
temp1: +25 C (low = +127 C, high = +127 C) sensor = thermistor temp2: +25 C (low = +127 C, high = +127 C) sensor = thermistor temp3: +36 C (low = +127 C, high = +127 C) sensor = diode When I masked the bits, it did work with my intel 875P, 'dmesg' indicated the right bits. FAST WRITE bit is ignored in my system (don't know why), but not the AGP.
