BFCool is still being judged by the masses


Default Still Getting Blank Screen!

hi guys - I'm thrilled to see the new drivers out, however I'm still getting the exact same problem as before. I'm thinking maybe its just more obvious than i think it is, since I can't really find anyone mentioning dealing with it. Anyhoo, its just the same old 'startx' followed by a blank screen with 100 percent cpu usage. Kernel is 2.6.741, card is X300 SE, xorg 6.8, here's the logfile:

I noticed in your xorg.conf you have UseInternalAGP set to "Yes" If you compiled kernel level AGP support in to your kernel then you must set this to "No"

If you are not sure, then post your dmesg.

This is the most common cause that I have found of the black screen problem. The other clue is the excessive "drmOpenDevice" messages in your xorg log.

Arrgghh, just wrote a pretty large post about me having this same problem but accidently hit a link in Lynx and lost the post. If I wait a while before using alt+SysRq I get the rest of the log appearing. I have tried both the internal and external agpgarts.
My system:
Athlon 1800+ @ 1533mhz
Asus a7v333 (via kt333 based)_
768mb ddr266
x800 xt platinum edition
and my distro is lfs-based with:
vanila 2.6.10 with uml patch (i think i still got it there)
glibc 2.3.3 stable
gcc 3.4.2
xorg-6.8.2 (have tried 6.8.1 and 6.7.x and xfree86 4.(3,4).0)
I have debug logs if anyone wants to see them (and if they will help).
In pursuit of the cause of this problem I enabled a slew of debugging options in the kernel and the fglrx module. After I enabled DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP but before I enabled debugging in the fglrx module, I was getting this just after the fglrx module loaded:

Ok, in case anyone is paying attention, I have coopted another machine so I could ssh into my computer. My problem is exactly the same as BFCools. It is X that takes up 99.5 of the cpu usage (from top) and when attempting to kill X, it hangs the computer completely and alt+SysRq does not work.

First guess try an stock kernel.org kernel (eg 2.6.10) without uml.

Second guess you may have an irq-routing problem:

Tried that today, no change at all. The uml patch (iirc) doesnt touch anything outside of arch/uml apart apart from a few lines in the memory management stuff.

I noticed that boot message a while ago. Irq 16 is assigned to my uhci module (usb) and the only usb device thats attached to that subsystem is my mouse which works perfectly fine with or without the pci=routeirq option (and if it had problems with pci irq routing then I am sure it would have been noticed before now). However looking through my kernel logs, the only place where the irq problem occurs is when I am starting X using the fglrx module and it appears to coincide with the initialisation of the mouse in X.

Just curious, is there any ati linux driver developers on this forum? and if so, would it be possible to get one of them to look closer at this problem? I will help as much as possible. I have a fair idea of what the problem is but without access to the source code of the closed sections of the driver I cannot fix or even really narrow it down to a particular section of code.

Any other ideas?

I was wrong . I ssh'ed into my box once I started X today and was poking around in everything to see if I could spot any problems. Once X is started, the video card is assigned irq 16 as well according to lspci -v

When DRI is enabled, X crashes. X starts with XAA enabled but as soon as I try to run any 3D it (X) seg-faults.
