First off, I noticed the sound seems to be much better, voices sound clearer. The movement and mouse is much better in the newer version too. Some decals, like cracks in walls, are rotated a different way in the new version. Lighting is the biggest difference you'll see. Some things like large pipes have more polys. There are pixel water, but I didn't come across any yet, but it's there Physics, some office chairs and barrels just slide, no physics yet. Top is old ------------ Bottom is new ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Finally a well done screenshot comparison - thanks a bunch. In all honesty it doesn't look that much different, since they didn't update the textures. As awesome as the engine may be, the textures being the same old ones stands out the most. ie, I can just play the good ol original hl1 and have myself a blast, instead of paying for the same game again.

Water definitely shows the greatest change. I wasn't happy that it didn't look much better but I appreciate the effort by Valve. |

Yup for sure standard HL1 models and NOT the BlueShift ones people where thinking it was going to have. Maybe an update will added it, but as is I'm not that impressed enough to spend the extra money to get it....but I geuss for those people that never played HL1 it cool ![]()

The ragdoll physics are really cool, all we need is a high res texture pack now. ![]()

hehe... I remember playing the HL1 map pack for the HL2 beta a while ago. Seems pretty much like the one now, except that it used HL2 ai (I think) and some HL2 models (not all of them) :P.

To tell you the truth, I'm not that impressed. I guess I was expecting a complete overhaul of HL1. Oh well. At least HL2 rocks! |

it looks a lot lot better to me mainly the lighting. Biggest thing I notice though is way less jaggies. Did you have AA on or is that everything has more polys? I'll prolly play it through again on the hardest level..it's been a long time.

I played a couple hours of HL:Source last night (I was going to just "see what it looks like" - honest ) and found one place where the new physics really make a difference - in the "jump across the hanging crates" puzzle the crates now swing when you land on them.

The original HL shots didn't have AA because there was no option in the menu for it and I was too lazy to quit and manually turn it on in the drivers. The source shots had 4xAA They were also resized from 1280*960 One thing I do have to say is it felt much better playing the Source version and polished. The sound was tons clearer, voices didn't have any crackles or anything. The movement was huge improvement. As soon as I loaded the original, I found myself accidently doing 180s trying to do a simple look to my left on the train with mouse sensitivity was 3. While source, it felt much better. So if I had to choose which to play, I'd play source, and I'd probably would have skip it if I only had the original to play. They also already unlocked all the chapters for you. I never played more than half the game, so it looks like it gets really wild near the end. Though, I might wait to see if someone mods better models and textures. But I was still impressed with the game overall. Like when I accidently turned on the alarm at the front desk, Are when you turn out the lights the scientest freak. Oh, I also noticed something strange. After the accident, when you get to the first door that needs to be unlocked by a scientest, in the Source version he said he'd follow you, and actually went a little further through the room where the rays were shooting from the chamber into it. While in the original, he immediatly walked back to the other sciented after scanning his eyes.

Was Trueform enabled only through the Blueshift pack?? I want my Trueform! I've got it on app pref in CP but it's not showing up in the game. Did the game have to be running in OGL for Trueform? Can't remember. Easiest way to see it was on Barney's helmet, really blocky without it.

Am I the only one who thinks that the HalfLife:Source should be a free upgrade for anyone who plunked down the cash for the original? The differences I see aren't enough to justify investing more $$$ in an old product, but then I've always been a cheap SOB. ![]()

There is something odd going on in regards to Blue Shift. It was never included in Steam and isn't compatable with it. However, I certainly can see fans hacking HL:S so that it uses HL2 textures and models. |

Thanks for the comparison screenshots! I actually had no idea what HL: Source was all about until reading this thread. I assumed that it was a remake of HL using the new engine that would make it look as good as HL2 does now. Looks like I was wrong. The graphics barely look better than the original. It's good to see this though because I was pondering actually spending a bit more money to get it since I never played through all of the original. This is the kind of informative post that helps me decide to save my cash. ![]() It does tempt me to go back and play w/ the engine upgrade on my Blue-Shift disc though!

I think valve did not use the blue shift ones because they are a not a full set, If they used them then about half the textures in the game would be high rez and the rest would be the old lower rez ones and would look inconsistant...that is what I read on the stema forums anywaze(semi official) |

All I was expecting from HL:S was the original Halflife levels, models, sounds etc ported to the source engine, which is exactly what I got. So I'm satisfied. Personally I think the Blue Shift models damage the original Halflife feel, I'm glad they didn't use them. Halflife is still a good game, pixel shaded water and ragdoll effects can only make it better. |
