Default mce decoder error: the video decoder has either malfunctioned....

for some reason, i have been getting this error when i try to watch live tv, a recorded show or even a dvd:

"decoder error: the video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed."

i have power dvd 5 and have had mce 2005 for a few weeks now without any problems. reinstalling power dvd 5 didn't fix the problem.

any ideas?
