Straight from driver heaven I have been chatting with Terry Makedon in ATI asking him if you guys could have the 4.9 drivers that certain websites have been using to review Doom 3, and he has said they will be available sooner than you can imagine ATI is providing an early version of CATALYST 4.9 to users interested in increasing performance of Doom 3. The BETA display drivers found here are offered AS IS, without warranty of any kind, and have NOT been completely qualified by ATI. Usage of these drivers are without support of any kind, and you use them at your own risk. ATI does NOT recommend installing these drivers in systems used for mission critical operations or where productivity of any kind is a concern. Unless you are very comfortable with installing and un-installing drivers, we DO NOT recommend that you use the drivers provided here. These BETA Drivers are NOT SUPPORTED by ATI Customer Care or any other ATI department. I asked Terry if these drivers will support instancing on farcry 1.2 (or higher patch), and he said yes, these drivers also provide early support for instancing.

The performance different with my 9800 XT from 4.8 beta to 4.9 beta is 0%! Maybe 4.8 beta already contained much better OpenGL driver that is used in 4.9 beta... Or maybe its for X800 series only!

Confirmed performance diff between 4.8 beta and 4.9 beta negligible. (radeon 9800 pro 1024x768 0 aa 16 af on doom3) ATI I'm liking this aggressive move.(even though performance in doom3 is same as 4.8 beta)

File says it is a HOTFIX. This a full driver/control panel replacement, meaning run the uninstaller, or just an "over the top" install? |

This is my own timedemo. It included the cutscene where the Pinky first appears, I kill it, and an Imp appears.. throws two fireballs and I kill it. Settings are on High, 1024 x 768.. everything except V-Sync on. The results are the second run of the demo. 4.4 w/No AA 35.8 4.4 w/4xAA 24.8 4.9 w/No AA 32.3 4.9 w/4xAA 22.6 As you can see, the 4.9s give no performance increase over what I was using prior to it.. the 4.4s. I would not be surprised if the 4.9s are meant for the X800 series of cards. I will be posting this in every Cat 4.9 thread in Rage3D.

Confirming 4.8 betas -> 4.9 hotfix gives negligable performance increase. 4.7 -> 4.8 gave 2-3 fps at every resolution, these 4.9's do not lose any ground in that regard. So anyone running the 4.7's would probably be pleased if they updated.

I'd like to see the performance improvement on newer hardware. Let the benchmarks begin! ![]()

Ok I just tested these drivers on my x800 VIVO@xt-pe: Game Config Ultra High Quality Vsync Off 1280x1024 resolution TIMEDEMO 1 Catalyst 4.8b Results FPS: 60.2 Catalysts 4.9b Results FPS 66.3 Definitely a very nice increase for x800 series cards, thanks ATi! Hopefully they can continue to crank up the OGL performance through drivers for all ATi cards.

With my 9800Pro I saw a 3fps increase at 1024x768 in High Quality in the timedemo. Went from 39.0 to 41.9 |

Doom3 for me has remained around the same but still playable on my rig at 1280x1024. on High Detail. But CoD seems to run nicer but it never did run anything but nice on this rig. Just inpatiently waiting for my x800xt to arive.

I posted this in DH, but want to re-state it here: The Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers are a sneak peak into future drivers that ATI is continuously working on. They were released mainly for the OpenGL component update, targeting improved Doom3 performance. Having said that, newer generations of hardware will get the most benefit from this driver (X800* series). While I haven't done specific benchmarks, X800 users can see performance increase of 5~30%, depending on the level and the system/hardware type. Regretfully, older hardware, such as 9700's and even 9800's will not get as much benefit. And if paired with a slower system (or with less memory) might see +/- performance improvements. We are working very hard to get future drivers out that will add quite a bit to the performance of these. Remember that these are Beta drivers, and so are unsupported. If you want stability and good speed, please stick with the release drivers. Cat 4.8 has not been skipped, and should arrive soon. Thanks Last edited by sireric : Aug 3, 2004 at 06:11 PM. |

If you have a new model of anything, it has to look good in the face of the competition or people move to the competition - last years model takes a back seat until the current model looks good.

You guys think that it would be feasible to just take the opengl driver out of the 4.9's and replace the one installed with the 4.7's? As i would really like a Doom 3 increase but i don't wanna start having to tinker with all my other games that run perfectly. All of them being Direct 3D games btw. Besides...i figure this since this is what i had to do for KOTR to run right. Anyone? |

4.9 betas are worth trying, I got about 10 fps increase for my x800pro@XT but MORE IMPORTANT a got almost rid away of those annoying 1sec lock-ups while opening a door, shooting for the first time...It is extremly visible when benching with the timedemo command. It took me five times with catalyst 4.7, before the demo finally stopped heavily accessing my harddrive (and so badly dropping the framerate). Now the second timedemo run is completly smooth. (A64 3400+ but "only" 512 memory). So I strongly reccomend to try for anyone who has less than 1 GB memory.
