Default wits end with fglrx and X (gentoo)

I cannot get X to start using the fglrx drivers (xorg or xfree).
The vesa and radeon drivers are VERY slow on my pc, we are talking 10 mins to log into kde... but at leas they work.
The error that i am getting is :

II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Funny thing is, after looking thro the log files i get this comparisson

fglrx : (--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x4e48) rev 0, Mem @ 0xe8000000/27, 0xfe5f0000/16, I/O @ 0xb800/8, BIOS @ 0xfe5c0000/17

vesa : (--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x4e48) rev 0, Mem @ 0xe8000000/27, 0xfe5f0000/16, I/O @ 0xb800/8, BIOS @ 0xfe5c0000/17

meaning that both drivers are using the same device (correct) device but somehow the fglrx drivers wont work (even when i use the secondary chipset)
I am running (hardened) gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7-r6, gcc 3.3.3-r6 ati drivers 3.9 (latest ones i think?).

i am using fglrxconfig to generate my config file and the only diff being that i change [driver] from "vesa" to "fglrx" and then nothing works.

I have not had a desktop for over a month now so any help would really be appreciated.

Have you read the ATI Linux HowTo guide (sticky thread)? It has some instructions on what to do when you run Gentoo.

You seem to be running a PCI card. I remember somebody having some problems on these boards. You may want to try a search.

nope, i have an AGP card. And i know my combo of hardware works cos i had things up and running about 6 months ago but had to get a new hard drive (same model). iits just the software that has changed. after running fglrxconfig it says auto detecting card at PCI:1:0:0. which is where my card is at. even tho its AGP.....

I think I said this in your Gentoo forums thread, but I can't remember seeing a clear solution to this type of problem before. Have you tried remerging X, different driver versions, different kernel versions etc? Does the fglrx module load properly, and are there any errors in your "dmesg" output?

yea, i posted this in the gentoo forums as well. the module loads fine, there are no errors in dmesg and i have tried a few 2.6.x kernels. i have tried using XFree then X.org and then XFree again and then i build my whole system from scratch again. a point maybe worth noting (i have no idea) is that i got that libbitmap.a error that a few ppl are having http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.p...ight=libbitmapbut i had to compile my X with USE="static" as none of the solutions posted there worked (-pie - hardened etc).
is it possible that the 2 are related?

The problem with libbitmap.a is that gcc was compiled with "hardened" - you need to emerge gcc with "-hardened" and then X with "-hardened"
