Creative's own API is EAX. Most all other competing soundcards use sensaura for 3d positional audio. Creative could decide to force everyone to buy their soundcards if you want decent sound for games. THAT MAY NOT be the case however. The vast majority of non-Creative Labs soundcards/soundchips on the market rely on Sensaura tech. This includes all the current chips from VIA, Cmedia, Realtek, Nvidia, Crystal ect. It is very likely that Creative will kill off Sensaura like they did with Aureal.

Hercules uses Crystal (Cirrus Logic) and Cmedia chips on their cards, both of which rely on Sensaura's 3d sound system.

Our only hope is Hercules, as they use Cirrus Logic for their main chip.

But they did / do use Sensaura technology for 3D I think.

I freakin' HATE Creative!

I miss Media Vision & Aureal, even if they were done in primarily
through their own bad management.

M-Audio also uses Sensaura. The chip it uses is the ICEnsemble VIA EnvyHT. The M-Audio Revolution 7.1 has been reviewed as being a far better soundcard than anything Creative puts out with the two exceptions of not having hardware Directsound support and not supporting EAX AdvancedHD. This card is truly wonderous. I just got mine with a set of Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1s and its the best Ive heard yet. Unlike Creative which can only do 24bit on 2 channels the Revolution can do 24bit on all 8 channels which is sweet when you use SRS CircleSurroundII on the music setting. Heres a link to a review of the Revolution 7.1 for those of you that havent heard of it or for you guys that have heard of it but havent seen a review. This is hands down my favorite sound card ever. Ive built all sorts of PCs with the customer requesting Creatives Audigy 2 ZS and higher end speaker set like the Z-680s and Creative dosent hold a candle to M-Audios offering with the Revolution 7.1. Its just Creative owns all the technologies to the "game sound goodies" and wont let anyone else use it. I dont see how they have avoided being sued over this. They really are pushing it on the whole monopoly thing in the soundcard industry.

BTW....I forgot to mention that up until now M-Audio has been making Pro stuff. They just have started making consumer level stuff so they know what they are doing when it comes to serious professional grade hardware. Belive me when I say I havent heard anything like this soundcard, only high end stuff for your home like Aragon, Denon and Marantz paired with high end speakers has sound clarity and quality like this.

Booooo, and Sensaura was the only real viable option for the Un-Creative soundcard competitors in need of 3D sound engines, with Philips lagging way behind and QSound doing nothing new in years.

Doesn't bode well for the industry at all, which has gone nowhere but backwards since Aureal's demise at the hands of this sleazy corporation.

The CPU Utilization isnt an issue with a pretty fast processor, something like a P4C. Anyway, its also a non issue when listening to music as FPS are not there to worry about. I mentioned gaming wasnt a strong point but I think it sounds just great in games and havent noticed any performace issues at all. You have to try the Revolution 7.1 to really appreciate it.

I've read some review's and it sounds

worth buying they seem to praise it's high sound quality and ease of installation (lack of bloatware drivers) big plus

This anti-competitive loophole in the legal system should be stopped. $5 says Creative will just shelf Sensaura and give the last remaining competition the finger. I hope to Jebus Nvidia comes out with a standalone card supporting OpenAL because the consumer sound card industry could be doomed to a life of Creative-only until Nvidia or some other unlikely player steps up.

i didn't think that nvidia uses sensaura chips. i thought they used their own chip for audio processing (at least in the soundstorm) and a realtek dac. and anyway, if that's the case, then they are going to be the only real competition for creative, cuz most other soundcard suck in comparison to the audigy 2 or the soundstorm.
