In listening to both albums lately, I am thinking Mer de Noms is a better album than Thirteenth Step. It feels more like a "Tool" type album, in terms of some of the low, driving instruments - slower than a Tool album, but a pretty good transition. Thirteenth Step - I just can't get my head around the album, as a whole I mean. Mer de Noms seems to flow pretty well from start to finish. Thirteenth Step feels somehow "fragmented" as it goes from track to track at times. It feels much more "experimental" and less of a complete work. PET is perhaps the best song on Thirteenth Step songs. Lyrics are as good on that song as the music is. Very cool. Blue is not so bad, the Package ain't workin' for me (that "Aeeyeee" thing gets annoying), but Weak and Powerless and The Noose are pretty good. Songs like Vanishing take some time to get used to. Overall, I think that while there are a couple/few bright spots in Thirteenth Step, Mer de Noms is just a better overall album. Mer de Noms is not about individual tracks for me - but about how well it sounds from start to finish as a complete work. Is there anyone out there who actually prefers 13 Steps to Mer de Noms? If so, what makes you like Thirteenth Step better? Last edited by TheMonkeyBoyz : Sep 30, 2003 at 06:44 AM. |

Personally I like Mer de Noms better because it is quite flowing, 13 steps, I like only about 65% of the songs with some songs just sounding like what Maynard did with tool when he made random songs that made no sense and generally sounded horrible. However the songs that I do like in 13 steps I generally like more than the individual songs in Mer de Noms, although Magdalena is still my favourite APC song Just my 2c. Oh yeah first post ![]() |

Weak and powerless is awesome ! I prefer the first one... don't own the album but my friend bought it... from what I've heard I really like it ! Perfect Circle is the kind of band I'm happy to encourage ie not download their album off the net and buying the cd.... |

Haven't had the chance to listen to the new one yet... I'm poor and lack funds for gratuitous cd buying. ![]()

mer de noms was great... thirteenth step is far too slow for my taste. I'll still take Tool over A Perfect Circle any day of the week though. |

New album is better. It's true that Mer is more "Tool-like", but that's what Tool albums are for. |
