Is ATI getting PS3 contract on top of GC2+Xbox2 ?????????????

I still seriously do not think Sony is going to get a 3rd party to devlop the graphics power for the PS3

However I wonder if ATi could even take on such a large load of projects. They would then have to be devloping 3 different GPUs all of wich launch in and around the same time. Not to mention they also have the Radeon todo at the same time plus they also have MB chipsets to devlope etc etc

No, Sony is designing it' own GPU, in-house, only this time, they are said to be concidering partnering with Nvidia
(or ATi it seems) on some aspects of the GPU. most probably, for the Pixel Engines shown in the Visualizer diagram.

large corporations are often on dozens of technical boards. to infer any intimate connection, right now, is pre-mature. the 'Stanford connection' http://graphics.stanford.edu/projects/shading/ looks intriging but we cannot assume too much yet. perhaps ati and/or nvidia will help co-develop a tiny subset of the GPU for the ps3. everything about the playstation 3, however, is all sony.

Regardless of whether ATI gets the contract for Sony or not, I don't think it would be a problem for ATI to develop GPU's for the CONsoles. Once they DO come up with the chip for them, it's smooth sailing after that. All that needs to happen then is the production of the finished chip, there won't really be any changes after the initial creation of them for a CONsole. CONsoles don't upgrade.

So they develop the chip and just pump them out once the design is finalized. They would really only have to spend one development cycle per CONsole, unless they just use an existing chip and just alter it to work in the respective CONsole, in which case it's even easier. After that, it's maybe only refining the drivers for them, which I'm sure won't be too difficult for ATI.

I'm quite sure ATI has a plan where CONsoles are involved.

Yes. Ati tech is going to be in PS3. Now without any other consoles gpus unknown these threads can stop.

I already posted this in an Nvidia/PS3 thread.

IBM/Sony/Toshiba have finalized the Cell design. What's standing in the way now is time to make sure they can mass produce and mass-verify the Cell designs in a form fit for mass-consumer market.

The Cell CPU is being done by IBM, Sony, Toshiba.


the GPU, you know, the Graphics Processing Unit, is probably mostly being done by SONY, but Sony is NOT beyond looking for outside assistance.

A few years ago, before 3Dfx was swallowed by Nvidia, Sony was reported to be working with, or trying to hire, 3dfx engineers. no links or confirmation on that though.

There is a very real possibility Sony has been looking into co-operating with Nvidia on PS3's GPU or using their technology. or ATI's.

It does not mean, for the last time, that Nvidia will MAKE THE ENTIRE PS3 GPU. that wont happen. but Nvidia MIGHT contribute one or more pieces to the SONY-designed GPU. or lend Sony their IP so that Sony can use Nvidia technology themselves.

PS3 wont have an Nivida GPU like Xbox does. but there is NOTHING to rule out Nvidia (or ATI) helping Sony with certain aspects of the graphics.

please read my whole post, understand what I have said, and what I didn't say, before replying with something like:
