Unhappy New 8500 GTA3 problem: textures missing/mipmap glitch? (screenshots included)

I just bought my first ATI card the other day, an 8500LE w/ default clock of 250core/275mem, running XP and 6071 drivers.

Fortunately, I am able to play GTA3 at a halfway decent framerate, but I'm getting weird texture problems, especially on my first run through the city. At various points, the road textures do not load correctly, as the screenshots below attest to. This typically happens at the same places in the city each time. The shots below show the condition appearing both at nighttime, and during daylight. Looks like a mipmapping issue to me. Anybody else seeing this? Any ideas? I'm a little spooked that the first game I've tried has issues. The GF2 I was using before, while slower, didn't have this problem.

Thanks, Goto.

Yeah *BUMP* i get the same problem.. It happens to me when driving a really fast car and the textures don't load right away.

I am using omega 71a with xp on a 8500LE Sapphire card clocked at a dismal 300/225.

Also was wondering how do you check your fps in GTA3? My GTA3 runs fine at 1280x960 and i have lowered resolution but performance is always the same. when i get a lot of cops on my tall or doing a car chase the game lags and chops on me.

I already been reading GTA3 forums i have audio acoustic, trails, fame limiter, and frame sync all off and i still get this prob. I even lowered the distance view to its lowest and it seemed like it made little impact. It runs smooth when walking around (most of the time) and when i get in a car its pretty smooth initialy. But everytime i get into a car chase with cops on me it lags bad.

my specs are.
AMD Athlon 1.333ghz
512 SDRAM
ABIT KT7 m/b
SB audigy
Winxp Pro
2 40 gig HD's

I have rage3dtweak and unituner and have tweaked this bad boy as far as i can go(including bios)

thanks

I get this texture problems too.

And the FPS can be checked with FRAPS, a resident program that messes it, and writes it to the upper right edge out, and to a file too.

I get 30-160FPS with my system listed below. Sometimes it lags, after a couple of hours playing, but setting the AGP aperture to lower, and disabling Ansio helped a lot.
And copy your music files from the 2nd cd in your game dir, and install the nocd patch! THis will help you eliminating the lagging when changing music in cars.

In the options, try turning the draw distance either to maximum or minimum. This might reduce missing stuff.

This happens on ATI cards if you have frame sync off.

It actually seems to be tied to the Frame Limiter, rather than to Frame Sync. Turning on the Frame Limiter eliminates the problem--but who wants to play at 30 fps?

So whose problems is this--ATI's, or Rockstar's?

Below is posted a top-down screenshot which clearly demonstrates the problem w/ late loading textures. This happens constantly in this mode if frame limiting is off.

I had this problem occur when I changed the Trails setting during a game. It was there even after a re-install. I tried turning Trails off before starting a new game, and it went away. Then, I turned it back on during a game and everything is back to normal.

Good news re: late loading textures/shiny blue textures in place of the normal road textures.

This problem is not exclusive to the Radeon. I put my GF2 back in, turned off the Frame Limiter, and the same problem showed up, just as badly. Looks like it's definitely a GTA3 issue. This game is a mess.

BTW, my basic GF2 GTS 32M runs the game faster than my Radeon 8500. It also doesn't suffer from the crushingly low framerates that appear after 1-2 minutes of play w/ the Radeon. Weird.

It's supposed to do that, that's the frame limiter off, as some people already said.
It doesn't draw in everything to keep the frame rate up on a system that can't handle it. Yeah it looks weird, but it works.

Hey, I want to play GTA3 at 30fps. And i do.. i might have forgotten to do the refreshfix when i last upgraded the drivers, havent played that much so cant remember.. or why is it 30FPS [ thinking its 60FPS refresh and because it cant do that it uses 1/2 of that, like on VSync ].

BUT anyways.. the game is great @ 30fps, since it ALLWAYS IS 30fps. No slowdowns, just smooooooth. In that kind of game i dont need 60fps, 30 is great. Maybe you guys should NOT use Fraps to allways check the FPS.. i just like to play the game, not check out whats my MAX FPS on that game.. its ALL about MIN FPS... and in this case its 30fps.

I don't know man.. in GTA3 it's VERY obvious when it's 30fps opposed to 50 or 60.

And 25? Ugh (which in theory should be smooth as well).

Just this game though.. others I've no problems with even 20.
