Angry Bethesda shuts down Doom remake mod the moment it's released.

Quote:
Doom Remake 4 is (or was) a massive mod compilation, first released in August 2018, that brings Classic Doom into the modern era. We took a look at the updated Experimental Edition in May and it was very impressive, with 3D models, high-resolution textures, physical based rendering, and bodies you can blast into sticky chunks because they're not just sprites anymore. The core game itself remained completely unchanged, however: The maps and weapons are both exactly as they were in the original game.

As a result of a cease-and-desist letter from Bethesda Softworks, however, the mod is no longer available.

There's more at the link. I have to wonder if Bethesda was aware of this mod being made, why not just stop the developer from creating it to start with? Did they have to wait until he actually released it to take action? Bethesda responded so rapidly they had to have been following it...

Really sucks because it looks quite good.

The modders should of seen this coming IMO.

The mod seems meh to me. Keeping the levels EXACTLY the same looks very out of place.

Yet another thing to add to the long list of items that make Bethesda one of the scummiest publishers.

Actually, lawyers that they have contacted agree they would likely win the fight if they took it to Bethesda and that Bethesda knows this, but it would cost the modders a minimum of 100k and a years worth of court time...and Bethesda knows this as well.

Basically, B-soft is throwing their weight around because they can.

Something's not right, wasn't the original Doom source code released to the public domain? Which is why we had a ton of improved Doom versions after its release? And that was like 10+ years ago. Nobody got shut down back then because it was open source and you could do whatever you want with it except charge for it, it had to be free.

What's so different about this one?

And if you're concerned about whether or not that penis is strong enough to be load bearing for such a journey, you forget that what fills all of those engorged crevices is freedom.

Because Zenimax owns Bethesda.

and yeah, this is really stupid, they shouldn't be shutting it down. That mod isn't going to cause less sales of their new game.

It could be a trademark issue. They've been aggressive on the trademark front before (the whole 'Scrolls' debacle).

For trademark, you do need to kind of police your mark. There can be legal consequences if you get too lax with letting people use your mark. So, if they freely let people go around using 'Doom' on video games that aren't being sold by Bethesda, then it could potentially hurt them.

They should start a GoFundMe and try to crowd source the legal bills.
