Just built my L/C/R's and need to fine sand and finish them. My HT is a budget build with a Denon 1610 Reciever and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. My Left and right speakers are 2pi studio's and the center is a 1pi. I will build 2 more 1 pi's for surrounds and finish it off with a second Table Tuba sub or possibly a THT or something. The TV is a Samsung Plasma.

They are set to large though many would argue that is not the best way for them to be set. I am leaving them that way til I get a second sub.

Got them finished here are a cpl pics.

Looks interesting so I got a few questions for you.

Why did you pick the Pi kit over others?
Did you buy the kit from Pi or use your own speakers?
How much work was it to build the speaker boxes and what kind of tool set did it take?
Can you post some build shots?

Why did you pick the Pi kit over others?

These speakers have a high sensitivity so it takes less power to drive them. Example: watching TV with my old Pioneer towers I had the volume at about -5 or closer to 0. With my new Pi speakers I get the same volume with MUCH more clarity at around -15 to -10.
I haven't got allot of money and wanted to build "budget" speakers. out of all the speakers I found these seemed to be at the right price/performance point. I also really like the look of the studio monitor size speakers over towers. I just feel they are a bit sexier =P

Did you buy the kit from Pi or use your own speakers?

I bought the kits from Wayne at Pi speakers. Its more than just speakers you get the crossovers and all the internal wiring. You just have to build the simple boxes.

How much work was it to build the speaker boxes and what kind of tool set did it take?

Simple. I used a table saw but a Skill saw would have been just as easy. and a router with a home made circle cutting jig. I chose to recess the speakers but they can be flush mounted with no loss of sound quality.

My work area. You can see it is truly nothing special. =P

As you can see it is really just a simple box. He gives you the plans for free and his support on his site is just top notch.
A build post of mine.

Well the HT got a little bump. Nothing mind blowing, as it is rarely used, but a WDTV Live Plus and an upgrade to a HDTV will probably see it getting allot more use.

Next up, that receiver and crappy digital cable box(was free from my cable company) are going to be replaced.

Here's a crappy pic of my HT... With the lights off it's much better but my camera sucks for dark shots.

Would love to upgrade to a brighter, 1080P projector but it won't happen this year. Probably the next or so...

Edit: WTF it's almost the same pic I took months ago on top of the page no less

I think I have that same receiver. Is that a Sony STR-K840P?

Wow, between 2001 & 2009 Sony didn't change their receiver designs very much did they. They look almost identical. However, it is a Sony STR-DE575, which I bought back in 2002.

Ahh ok. Yeah I have an older than 2002 model, but it looks exactly like yours.

Amazingly mine is still working great.

I got these Hsu HB-1 MK2's R/L's and a HC-1 MK2 center recently, and I mounted the center today. I them, they sound great. Decent projection, very dynamic and accurate imaging. Next up, new television

Nice. Hows the tweeters on those MK2s? Do they have a wide sweet spot?

Well they certainly have a wider sweet spot than my previous Hsu Ventriloquist setup did. Moving off-axis doesn't collapse the soundstage like it did with the Ventriloquists.

While it's difficult to compare speakers unless they are used in the same environment and use the same setup, I think the imaging of these sound as good as my father's B&W bookshelves/center (I don't know the models) in our respective setups. Their projection could be better, but for the price they aren't bad at all - only spent about $500 for all three speakers with shipping.

They handle up to 250 watts each, are 92db efficient at 1 watt/1 meter (in half space though; which would make them around 89db in full space), and are frequency response is 60Hz to 20kHz - but honestly it sounds like they get down to 40Hz. Either way they definitely benefit from the use of a subwoofer. They have 6 1/2" woofs and the tweets are constant directivity horns. I've always hated horn speakers from past experiences, but these have absolutely no hint of the hollow honking twang that typically comes out of horns. I'm actually amazed - you would never know that they are horns.

Most of my stuff is pretty old, but it works for what we need. Sorry for the dark photo... It's not much, but here are most of the components:

Samsung PN58B650 58" Plasma
Sony STR-DE698 Receiver
Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Player
Sony CDP-C445 5-disc CD Changer
Phillips VCR
Technics Cassette Player
Otimus 10-Band Graphical Equalizer
Eosone RSF600 Floor Speakers
Bose Model 21 Shelf Speakers (not pictured, used in the rear)
Infinity Primus C25 Center Speaker
XBox 360 with Kinect

Monster HTS 1000 MKIII 8-Outlet and all Monster cables.

and the media wall on the side..... Looking to eventually do some built-in's on the wall since we've run out of DVD space...

, I want a plasma TV so bad

If hard drive prices where not insane right now, I'd recommend you consider looking at buying a networked drive bay, some 2+TB hdd's and dropping in a network media player to access it. Could have the entire collection of DVD's in ISO's and not loose a thing but some time in copying the discs. Also free up some space for Blu-Rays

It's kind of like books in a library, my wife likes to have them displayed. She's just buying more than we have space for..

This is what we did earlier last year. Great for keeping the kids from messing up the discs. BRs take up a bunch space though. Gonna have to go through and compress them eventually. Also, some Disney DVDs are a PIA to copy. They got some sort of fancy junk in there to stop pirates. I think AnyDVD can defeat it but costs money that I don't want to spend. Kind of funny that a Disney BR is easier to rip than their DVDs.

Default Upgraded from a 200wpc Class A/B amp to 35wpc Class A

So I got a MF AMS35i 35wpc pure Class A amp to replace a MF M6i 200wpc Class A/B amp in the living room about 2 weeks ago. Here are some pics.

AMS35i (left) and M6i (right) side by side.

The grand grand grand pa, a modded (new capacitors and op amps) MF A1 20wpc Class A amp I have in the bedroom in the foreground, M6i behind it and AMS35i on the equipment rack.

Massive heatsinks on the sides that get too hot to touch for more than a few seconds.

The whole 2.0 setup.

Most people must be thinking "WTF did you "downgrade" from a 200wpc amp to 35wpc?" TBH, I was also a bit skeptical about this move at first. After all, this 35wpc AMS35i costs over twice as much as the 200wpc M6i. But I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised at the result. Not only has everything I listen to become more musical (love that piano, violin and human vocals that is more tube like), but it is also more analytic which allows some complex classical pieces (e.g. Tchaikovsky's 1812) which somewhat sounded like a mess on the old amp to play with ease. However, the most surprising thing is that there is a very noticeable improvement in bass. That's right, there is more bass from this 35wpc amp than a 200wpc one. Never knew that the woofers in my VA Beethoven Concert Grands can sound like that in old school jungle / drum and bass tracks. Obviously, this is no replacement for for a proper powered subwoofer, but IMO it has come a lot closer.

To conclude, the specs would seem to indicate the new amp is severely underpowered but in reality, it seems to be better than the old one in every aspect. Well, maybe NOT power consumption and heat coz this amp generates a sh*t load of heat and consumes full power the moment it is switched on even when idling. The downside with that is I need to turn on the ceiling fan and a/c after an extended listening session, just like how I need to turn on the a/c in my gaming room. But if you have reasonably sensitive (say 90db or above) 4ohm speakers (the amp's output increases to about 60wpc at this load), I would suggest an audition of a Class A amp for a 2.0 setup. Don't rule it out simply because of the seemingly "low" power output.
