Thumbs up Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" Previewed, Sweet New Tablet Exposed

Google continues to aggressively improve its popular mobile operating system

It's no secret what gave Google half of America's smartphone market and propelled it into second place worldwide in global smartphone sales -- a combination of an open ethos, a plethora of hardware options, and an aggressive schedule of operating system updates. The latest of those updates -- Android 2.3 Gingerbread -- just rolled out yesterday, but Google is already hard at work on its next round of goodies.

At the second and final day of the D: Dive Into Mobile conference in San Francisco, California, Android Chief Andy Rubin showed off a new tablet running Android 3.0, an operating system that bears the codename "Honeycomb."

The tablet alone looked quite impressive. The new tablet from Motorola sports a "dual core 3D processor" and NVIDIA GPU (possibly the new dual-core Tegra 2?). It also packs video chat and, of course, Android 3.0, into what looks to be a 10-inch footprint.

The device is rumored to be "Stingray" a Motorola tablet that's supposed to launch in the first quarter of next year on Verizon. Previously published rumors point to a 10-inch tablet packing Android 3.0, 16 GB of onboard storage, and be upgradeable to LTE ("4G"). And you guessed it, the leaks point to "Stingray" being powered by Tegra 2.

Honeycomb will be the first release of Android to officially support and be fine-tuned for tablets.

Customization seems to be a chief focus of the operating system. While Google's demo showed an OS that appeared to be sticking to a grid of icons, it didn't have the traditional Android buttons and looked more like a PC desktop. The demo wasn't long and didn't do much to fill in the scarce details currently available on the incoming OS. But it did certainly tantalize that Google has some sweet surprises left in store.

If "Stingray" indeed airs in the aforementioned form, it would likely surpass the Samsung Galaxy Tab and iPad as the undisputed champion of the tablet world, at least in terms of hardware. Those interested in picking up a tablet should keep their eyes on this one.

lol don't hold your breath...

WP7 seems nice and all, but most of the stuff I use come from Google. It feels wrong to use everything from Google on a Windows phone with their own services built in also.

Moto uses IPS on all of their phones, why would they go TN on a high end tablet?

Because it are be expensiver?

You're most likely right though, that it's probably IPS. The article's blurry shots don't really mean much but from the viewing angle, it doesn't seem to fade out like a TN panel would.

Yeah, but honestly, looking at recent releases, Android has a very long way to go before it can offer the same gaming options and experience. iOS gaming has exploded in a way that has pleased me greatly.

This isn't a dig on the Android OS in general, but just an acknowledgement that the game selection on iOS has become quite amazing (I am seriously geeking out about it given this month's releases), and Android has some serious catching up to do (and does suffer some additional fragmentation problems, with many games being relegated to some devices and not others, even though the devices came out around the same time, it isn't just old versus new, but rather about if the dev happens to support your specific handset). I do think they will eventually get to the point where great games start coming to both platforms at the same time, but iOS is going to be leading for a good long while as far as choice and quality of games in concerned.

Now, the PSP2 phone should help Android along, but only if more phones other than the PSP2 phone can take advantage of the games coming out for the PSP2 phone, otherwise, Android gaming will only be all that great on the PSP2 phone and not necessarily all Android devices as a whole.

Do you really think Sony is going to divide their marketshare by making their PSPhone games available to other android handsets?

No, but I am still optimistic that they will take a long view of things and focus on the licensing fees per game instead of the sales of proprietary PSP phones.

The video also takes a stab at not only the iPad but the Galaxy Tab.

What Google need to do is buy Java from Oracle, then merge Eclipse and NetBeans into an IDE competitive with MSVS.

I tried a Galaxy Tab, realized 7" is way too small. I'm really looking forward to this Moto tablet. I'm also more interested in it because the performance on the Galaxy Tab was less than stellar, plus, it was quite literally just like a big phone. I now see why Google doesn't feel 2.X should be a tablet OS.

I find it funny all those people who have a tab make fun of the iPad and say its a big phone. The Tab is more of a big phone than the iPad is.. at least the iPad has made use of the tablet form factor and changed most of their apps to work with the real estate.

Ive read there are only like 3-4 third party apps that actually use the space on the Tab.( I think I read that on anandtechs review).

Honeycomb will probably fix all that though. Still no tablet for me, I dont see where an iPad or tab or anything would fit into my life.

Honeycomb May Require Dual-Core Processor

As well as a minimum of 1280 x 720 screen resolution

If the latest news about Google's Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" OS is accurate, it might render Android tablets currently on the market -- like Samsung's Galaxy Tab -- obsolete.

PCMag is reporting that the tablet-centric mobile OS may require baseline specs to run properly. Of these, at least a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor is required, along with a 1280 x 720 minimum screen resolution.
