So the super cheap low profile heatsink is worse than a cheap tower heatsink.

I bet no one could see that coming.

Who still buys these things for anything other than a mini ITX build?

I prolly wouldn't even for that. I'd plan my mini ITX build around Corsair's ITX closed loop without hesitation over using a traditional HSF unit. I think I'm just done with air cooling my CPU, regardless of desktop form factor.

Oh I'm not saying *I* would use one of these, just that it seems like the only situation anyone would buy one of these coolers unless they just don't know anything... I had a mini ITX build for an HTPC for a little while and I used an AIO in a case that was built for it. Don't think I would recommend anything else, really.

Ghastlyone is still being judged by the masses

The only thing these coolers should be used for is a Post Test before assembly of the new PC build.

Other than that, it would either go in a box full of spare hardware, are simply in the trash.

Stock coolers perform like stock coolers? Shocking.

It's good to know how the Wraith Spire performs. I really want to see how the Wraith Max performs now.

I personally wouldn't use it, but for someone on a budget or who doesn't take computers/overclocking that seriously, I see it being a decent alternative. Considering Ryzen doesn't overclock particularly well anyway and it seems to be mostly voltage limited, you're only giving up probably 100 MHz by running with the Wraith Spire. It's nice that the box cooler is actually halfway decent and capable of at least supporting minor overclocking. I doubt the higher temperatures will have a very significant impact on longevity.

You have to realize that a lot of stuff us enthusiasts do (best cooler possible, optimizing case airflow, etc) offer really kind of marginal improvements. It's better, but we're really not gaining that much for the effort/extra money we put in.
