It is at 910 confirmed deaths now. Will probably hit 1000 after today.

Heard basically the same, a bit higher #s but by EOD today would be just over 1K dead and 40K infected. So sad.

No official CDC, DHS or DOD updates over the weekend so waiting on the Monday update. Those numbers where on the radio this morning on the way in to work. A news break between car crashes on i94/i90 lol

Data has suggested a massive amount of sulfur dioxide is being released into the air. Sulfur concentration is especially high around Wuhan and Chongquing, the cities most affected by the Wuhan coronavirus.
The massive release could be because of the crematoriums burning dead bodies en masse on the outskirts of the cities.

Just last week exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui claimed that the total coronavirus casualties are well over 50,000.

This number was his estimation based on the number of bodies China’s crematoriums are burning every day. Data has surfaced recently to suggest Wengui’s estimate may be correct.

Rising Sulfur Dioxide Levels Point To Overworked Crematoriums
A heatmap taken from Windy shows a tremendous amount of sulfur dioxide levels in air around mainland China.

The dark spots indicate a higher concentration of sulfur dioxide. | Source: Windy
Rising sulfur levels indicate a release of organic matter in the air, as a Twitter user pointed out.

Massive amount of sulfur dioxide is being released in Wuhan. | Source: Twitter
Ideally, there could be several reasons behind the sudden spike. Nuclear plants, garbage, and animal carcass burning or the industrial areas could all be responsible.

But, the elevated levels of almost 1400 ug/m^3 could point towards mass crematoriums running overtime in these areas. For context, 80 ug/m^3 level is usually considered dangerously high.

Next in line was Chongquing, a megacity in southwestern China, with 800 ug/m^3. Coincidentally, Chongquing has also been severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Chongqing has also witnessed a significant rise in sulfur dioxide levels. | Source: Twitter
The Chinese government has shut down many major factories, coal-fuelled power plants, and manufacturing to curb the coronavirus outbreak. So there is little chance that they could be responsible for the rising levels.

And if you compare the levels to other parts of the world, where these plants are operational, the stark contrast is apparent.

China is glittering with spots of massive sulfur dioxide release. | Source: Twitter
Due to the massive rise in sulfur levels, thick smog has blanketed the city of Wuhan. Reports suggest that this smog is coming from the crematoriums on the outskirts of the city.

Unconfirmed of course, but worth keeping a mental note on...

Part of the report:

Did you see any of the dead yourself?

There was a video that showed three dead bodies lying in a Wuhan hospital’s corridors circulating widely online before. I was told by some nurses in a local hospital that the video was true. The nurses also said this situation was because the local funeral homes did not have the capacity to transfer all those bodies. I have seen bodies many times during the past days, which makes me feel emotional. I saw two dead bodies at a hospital, one was lying in the corridor, and one was in an emergency room being wrapped up by nurses… I could not take a close shot of them because that would be disrespectful to the deceased. It is not unusual for bodies to be seen in hospitals, but the fact they were left there for a long time means it is an abnormal situation. The fact the bodies were lying there means even funeral homes are struggling to deal with the number of bodies waiting to be picked up.
Looks like this guy has been ghosted:

It's complete BS.

That article mentions Chongquing as being the 2nd most affected city after Wuhan and yet the GIS page that Clave posted earlier shows Guangdong being second. In fact, Chongquing is number 9 with 473 cases compared to Wuhan's 29,631 cases and Guangdong's 1,159 cases (which is a smaller blip on the SO2 heat map).

Plus the guy doesnt even show previous data for comparison.

Perhaps this is more to Koenigs liking;

Quote:
The real number of coronavirus cases is more than 75,000, according to a scientific model that says the outbreak will double in size every 6.4 days.

https://www.businessinsider.com/wuha...et-says-2020-1

The true number of people infected with the deadly Wuhan coronavirus is more than 75,000, according to a scientific model, which claims the official number for those infected is far too low.

Academics at the University of Hong Kong published a paper on Friday in The Lancet, a prestigious medical journal, estimating the rate at which the virus is spreading.

It used official data on the number of infections to calculate what it said was the true extent of the disease — almost 100 times the official figures.

Underpinning the analysis is the idea that the number of international cases is disproportionately high given the number of people who travel from Wuhan to other countries.

The academics used the international figures to reverse-engineer a total for the number of cases among greater Wuhan's population of around 19 million.

They said that, as of January 25, they estimated that the number of cases was 75,815.

According to CNN, the official total on January 25 for the whole of Hubei province, which includes greater Wuhan, was 761, barely 1% of the total projected by the scientists.

The paper is not the first to suggest that the official figures do not adequately capture the scope of the outbreak. A paper from Imperial College London published on January 17 suggested that the figures were too low by a factor of 35.

As part of their model, the Hong Kong academics predicted that the scale of the virus would double every 6.4 days. By that logic, the number of people in greater Wuhan with the virus as of this Friday (January 31) would be 151,630.

The official number of cases on January 31 was less than 10,000. The number increased to around 12,000 as of February 1 local time.

The authors of the study said they had taken into account the effect of the dramatic lockdown imposed on Wuhan and surrounding cities last week.

However, they said that its overall effectiveness would be "negligible" given that a critical mass of cases had already been observed in several other cities.

In a meeting on Thursday, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency.

On Friday, the US government announced a ban on any foreigner entering the country within 14 days of being in mainland China. It said US citizens would be allowed to enter but placed in quarantine.
Their model makes more sense than what we are being told. It is important to keep an open mind here folks as the low numbers we are being told just does not make sense. Keep in mind this was back in January.

I'm talking about keeping an open mind. Claiming that these are the exact numbers and trusting that the Chinese government is telling us the whole truth is naive at best. They have everything to gain by keeping the real numbers out of the public as their economy is already taking a hit just based on what has been released. Simple logic and common sense can go a long way here...

Exactly. We may not know the exact numbers, but they have to be higher than what we are being spoon fed.

I have 3 mainlanders on my team -- they live in Canada now but all three say 40k is laughable. China is so dense in any city things like this spread like wildfire and it's bad press...so these numbers are ultra conservative.

I agree it may be higher but what Clave isnt telling you is that he believes the death count is already 100k+. The two of us have already discussed this outside of Rage but he is taking any fringe story and giving it more credence than trustworthy agencies.

Keonig likes to bring private conversations and make them public (I will take this into consideration for any further conversations) so let me set this record straight; that is a lie and not what I said and I would appreciate it if you didn't assume what people are thinking. What I actually said was I believe over 100k are infected but I do believe the actual dead are much higher, but not in the 100k range. Learn to comprehend what you read and not what you think you read.

Infected numbers seem to be leveling out. So the number of deaths should probably slowly decrease. If this tracks like SARS then we'll have basically no deaths in a month, and the final death count will be 1300-1500.

Its almost certainly way past the mark where millions should have been exposed but only a small % get sick from it. In past years before we could decode dna on a dime these deaths would have been tabulated along with all other flu deaths in a given flu season making it slightly worse or the same as most other years. As it currently stands this year is no worse overall for flu deaths globally.

If we start panicking at every novel coronavirus we will be panicking often as its a main cause of the common cold that many get yearly. And for one to get a cold again the next coronavirus has to be novel to you in order for it to get past your immunity to the previous forms of it.

Not sure I really agree. The Flu, whether it be seasonal or an oddball strain like H1N1—can infect millions of people, but it kills a relatively low % of its cases: ~0.1%. Pandemic coronaviruses—like SARS, MERS, and the new one from China—are far more savage. SARS killed about 10% of its cases, on only ~8000 confirmed infections.

As of today, the Coronavirus has already surpassed MERS as far as infections go, and is killing >2.5% of cases (based on what my cool app tells me) -- thats already ~25% more deadly than the flu. Its too early to tell how bad this thing gets, but I think its too early to minimize it. Hopefully if they keep the infected isolated and quarantined it fizzles out sooner than later.

And don't forget -- the media said the same thing about Ebola in W. Africa in 2014, "Ebola is bad, Flu is worse." -- how did that comment work out?

Coronaviruses are highly contagious. Looking at the population density in China alone its virtually certain many more than 80 thousand were exposed. So while the death rate of those who are susceptible to this virus and get sick seems high we need to look at the exposure rate, the number of people who came into contact with the virus but whose immune system prevented infection, which is still unknown. Could be a million easy. 100 million at this point not outside the rhealm of possibility for a cold/flu virus which has been circulating for at least 4-5 months now.

Its a problem that we can identify whose who are sick easily and decode a genome quickly but we cant do widespread testing for immune responses in the population at large.

lets be serious in using the window of opportunity we have. We shouldn't lose this opportunity, if we lose we will regret it and the opportunity was created because of the serious measures china is taking in Wuhan and the other affected provinces that is slowing the spread of the virus to the rest of the world. But I don't think this status can stay the same for long.

That's why we have to use the current window of opportunity to hit hard and stand in unison to fight this virus in every corner if we don't we could have far more cases and and far higher costs on our hands and I don't think anyone wants that.

This is a common enemy and we have to fight it using this window of opportunity and fight it hard I thank you.
