Agree with that. The phone is awesome hardware wise, but what can they do anymore that truly wows anyone? People keep bitching that it looks the same, is that the only reason the One is getting praise? Its looks? It doesn't bring anything new to the table at all.

I'm more into the new software features.

S4 looks good. Need to know the CPU and then I think it seems like a logical purchase.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind releasing a quad-core and octocore variant?

From what I have read its either a 1.9GHz quad-core or 1.6GHz octocore which has 4 A15 cores and 4 low power A7 cores used when in low power mode.

When full processing power is required can an app/game access all 8 cores or just the 4 A15s?

I have read so much conflicting information on the S4 that I'm not too sure what is correct.

It can only use 4 cores at a time, fast or slow. The reason for the different processors is the LTE certification in the USA I believe. Could be mistaken though. UK should get the Octa.

Ahh gotcha, thanks.

Will they both be utilising the same GPU type?

Snapdragon S4 has Adreno 320, the Exynos has a PowerVR tri core GPU or something.

Performance in general the PowerVR > all others.

Cheers, really strange the way they are fragmenting the phone into two variants of hardware.

I'm sure both versions will be great but it's obvious as to which one I would want to buy.

I didn't say that but after all the info Ive gathered on both I prefer the octa version which has the faster powervr gpu. Now I might still get the snapdragon variant since when Im rdy to upgrade it will still be the most powerfull smartphone available in my area.

well the PowerVR GPU is the tops in the mobile space and just keeps getting faster and faster. Tegra3 would probably be the next one after that followed by the Mali400 and then trailing behind is the Adreno.

right now i think its PowerVR followed by the Adreno320 until either the next MALI or Tegra4 comes out. PowerVR is just that much faster than everyone.

Why the jump in resolution? 1920x1080 seems a little overkill for a phone, no? Surely won't help improve the battery life.

Not sure.

I haven't found the resolution wanting on my current phone, but I reckon if you have a 5" display, maybe it's the one to go with?

And again for context, apps/games are not GPU bottlenecked even now so the different S4 SoC/GPU variant is only an issue on paper.

Personally I think they should have kept the screen size the same as the S3 but shrunk the overall dimensions. Would have made for better ergonomics, and saved battery.

The thing with the widgets is load lag, not draw lag. All phones have this AFAIK.

Once those items are loaded, navigation is smooth. It's not so much a SoC limitation as it is a file system and memory limitation.

The lag also comes from the speed/type of ram they use.

You can see CLEARLY how bad/slow ram can cripple a system, just look at the TF700, Transformer Infinty tablet.

Great specs, top end Tegra3, all the bells and whistles. Horrible ram speeds, and its laggy and slow.

Devs have found out that the using the microSD is faster then the internal ram/memory. So when you root/unlock and put a new rom on it you can tweak it to use the SD memory for its cache and its WAY faster.

Yeah definitely agree about the internal flash speed issue. Oddly enough I don't get that much lag on my S3. I might have less widgets (doubtful) but it doesn't seem to freeze in response like it did on that S4 (rooted touchjizz JB too).

I'm more excited about Android 5 than any of the phones coming out to be honest, curious what Google will bring to the table. Hopefully they'll get rid of the last remnants of lag (e.g opening the Widgets panel first time) so that we can stop hearing the old 'OMG Android is still a laggy mess' BS.
