I think this has something to do with that head tracking 3D demo they showed a while back where the DSi camera tracked your head movements and altered the angle of the 3D environment you were looking at. Let me see if I can find that vid.....

Here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5QSclrIdlE&translated=1

Pretty cool if ALL games made for the new system will do that. That type of 3D even works for people who are blind in one eye, like me.

That's amazing!

I'm definitely getting it. It's backwards compatible too, so it's a win win.

was a PSP fan for a long time. Especially considering the DS/i was mostly kids games and lower graphics. But this move will probably make me reconsider. And will also force sony to finally release a new PSP and not remakes like the PSP GO.

Hopefully the hardware is a little stronger than that in the 1,000 versions of DS, to allow the developer's a bit more for 3D development.

I don't like the lack of an analog stick ...looks like all they had was a d-pad, but that could change.

As long as they have an analog stick I'm sold.

Nice to see 3D make it without the glasses, I think that's the only way it will honestly take off to mainstream.

The un-official speculation is that it may use sharps parallax barrier tech to achieve the 3D effect (*update for that is in the engadget link originally provided)

If I had to guess, it will pack extra power that will be reserved just to achieve the 3D effect without a slowdown. Otherwise backwards compatibility could get complicated.

I like what I hear so far! I hear rumours that it''l be as powerful as GameCube but that remains to be seen.

If it is GameCube-powerful with built-in 3D and full backwards compatibility...

If this is the case it would dominate the handheld market, goodbye to apple's iphone growing % and sony's small % of the market.

Then again, 3D itself will probably kill all the competition. But to have GameCube quality graphics ala psp but in 3D Metroid Prime and Smash Bros. in 3D, I want them NOW.

Most DS games don't really appeal to me, but I will probably get a 3ds since I am sure there will be a few games I like. Plus the kids are a lot more into most DS type games than I am.

I doubt it, the XL is probably going to hit $99-$129 pretty quickly around the time 3ds gets released. I'm betting they'll find a way to split the market efficiently like with the DSLite and DSi.

that video gives me the creepy idea of mounting the ds to a headset frame.
Virtual Boy 2...

But seriously, I've been thinking they need to do something given what the phone market is doing. With the fad that 3d is going right now they would mop up the market. It would be the Wii of portables bringing in previous non-caring players.

edit: omg, that triple view lcd could be the beginning of borderless eyefinity. And cheaper.

With any luck 3d is a trend, not a fad. I would be most dissapointed otherwise and be forced to eat your face.

I asked around here, and they are pricegougind the XL to 250$ here, while the Dsi and Ds are below 200$. I'm waiting for the 3DS to force these price manipulator dumbf***s here to change their pricing schemes yet again. I read that the XL only has a bigger screen though, the resolution stays the same as the Dsi, so some games may not look good on it.

I saw the XL in Wal Mart yesterday and was wondering about the resolution... I had a feeling they'd leave it as-is. They had a bunch of them in there though, one section of a cabinet was packed full.

Even if they used a higher resolution screen, it would probably only be scaled digitally anyway to the higher resolution and wouldn't look much better.

In any case, I'm not too keen on the DS and especially not the DSi XL, but the 3ds sounds bloody damned interesting.

Agreed, never got into the DS, but this 3D version has me quite interested. Might even buy one day 1 and then do my usual crying about lack of support
