Default Mobility Radeon 9000 Performance

Hi Gang

I'm new to this forum, so bear with me if these questions have been anwered before ...

I recently purchased an Eurocom Dream Machine III with a 128mb Radeon 9000 Mobility and a 3.06 P4 processor (512 mb memory and 5400 rpm 40gb drive).

I am not very pleased with its performance, especially when playing Links 2003 (graphics load fast but the golfer and especially the ball are very slow-moving) and MOHAA / Spearhead, where the action is pretty choppy.

I scored a 7205 in /3DMark2001 SE with Eurocom's drivers (dating back to Nov.2002), which I think is a decent score for a laptop. I tried the catalyst 3.1 drivers "adapted" to the mobility but score suffered.

Now i'm running the drivers w/o the ATI control panel with the best results so far.

Every time I try to turn on AA and AF I can't see any improvement and the 3dmark score goes down to 3900 (as expected). It also makes Links 2003 unplayable with badly corrupted graphics.

I just tried the TWEAK from this site, and couldn't see any improvement in performance, and this corrupted the graphics as well, even without turning anything on.

Can you think of anything that could improve the performance ? I am just a lousy perfectionnist (my point of reference is an AIW 9700 Pro which gives me a 15550 score...)

Any help will be greatly appreciated ! Thanks.

If you're trying to get anything similar to the 9700 then you should probably send the laptop back and wait for them to bring out the M10. I'm guessing you paid close to $3000 for that? The problem with the laptop vid cards right now is that they're too underpowered to properly take advantage of the processor's speed. That same laptop would play games just as well with a 1.6 Ghz P4 (probably produce about the same framerates).

I've got a 1.8Ghz w/ an M7 that plays the MOH demo and RTCW smoothly though and I'm only scoring about 4300 on 3Dmark.

Have you checked to make sure that DMA is enabled? Some of the laptop drives also come with power management enabled on them which can slow things down. To disable it you can download the intel application accelerator (just reboot after the install, and run the IAA program, check on the primary/master drive, and you should see options on the right hand side of the screen):

V.2.2.2 is the last one that supports mobile chipsets

What resolution are you using? I found that the M9 is very sensitive to resolution changes away from the native resolution of the TFT. I was kind of dissapointed after upgrading from the M7 to M9 when I compared the two cards at 1024x768 or 1280x1024. But after changing the res to 1600x1200, the native res of my TFT, the M9 clearly outperformed the M7. The M9 was even faster at the high resolution than on the lower ones.

I think I found something...

I use Argosoft as a mail server (using a mail server is the only way to access my POP server outside de ISP's network).

I stopped it and my score jumped from 7200 to 7550. Also, the graphics are 100% smoother and they don't "jump" anymore. I can't still play Links 2003 though. Don't know why a mail server would have such an effect...

I am using 1024X768, I'll try 1600X1200 (native resolution).

I also received the newest drivers and the BIOS that supports hyperthreading (I have a desknote). Maybe this will help too...
