Default HDD Issues

Trying to back up some stuff on my current setup before building the new PC. My current setup was two WD Black in drives in RAID 0 with two partitions, OS and Games. I then just used an old 500GB drive as a media/backup drive. Earlier this year that drive disappeared from my system, Windows Vista no longer recognized it. I gave that drive to a friend and he tested it on a work MAC and the drive appeared just fine.

Fast forward to today, and since the drive disappeared I have been tossing my photos and video I've taken on the OS partition of my RAID setup. You can see how this causes an issue with putting that data on something else. So I found an old 300GB drive and it didn't see it. I even tried the brand new SSD with the same results. I think something may be up with the SATA controller. It sees the optical drives just fine, but my HDD's won't work in those locations. I enabled everything in the BIOS that looked like it had to do with the HDD's with no luck.

This data is important and I need to get it off the current system before I can build the new one. It's about 200GB of data. I was thinking of running to the stores today and getting a portable USB drive. I'd rather not do this...if I am getting a drive I'd like it to be an internal drive.

Anyway, I'm stuck and not going to build my new rig until this is sorted. Suggestions?

When you say the drives aren't seen, are you talking about in Windows Explorer, Device Manager or Disk Management? If they are not seen in Windows Explorer, they aren't formatted and you need to use Disk Management to initialize them if need be and/or format them and/or Assign a Drive Letter to them. If they are not seen in Device Manager, then they are not being detected by the motherboard for some reason. Also, you may need to initialize them in the RAID BIOS.

Which is the scenario you are experiencing? Need more information to help you.

I can't see the drives in Windows Explorer, Disk Management, or Device Manager. It also doesn't show up in the BIOS.

You could get an external adapter- let's you connect an internal drive via USB. Great temporary solution.

Having an external drive for backup isn't a bad idea. I'd go the component route though with an empty external enclosure and put your own drive in it.

Bought a SATA-USB adapter and it would only work with the new SSD connected to it. Tried to back up to that but the software that came with it was just ridiculous. It wanted to do a whole image of the drive and would only let me de-select the My Documents, My Videos, My Pictures, My Music folders. Otherwise it tried to image the entire RAID array with no other options. Windows would only see it using that software.

Went to ****ing Walmart and bought a WD MyBook 1TB USB drive. Backing everything up now...working fine. What a pain in the ass.
