Faster 40nm GeForce May Be on the Way

The rumor mill is abuzz with news of a GeForce GT 240 graphics card, which the folks at IT168 claim to have benchmarked in both 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage.

This GeForce GT 240 is apparently based on the same 40-nm architecture as the GT 220 and G210, and it also has DirectX 10.1 support. IT168 claims the card has 96 stream processors, a 550MHz core clock speed, a 128-bit memory interface, and either 1GB of 900MHz DDR3 memory or 512MB of 900MHz GDDR5.

In 3DMark Vantage, the GDDR5 version outpaces the GeForce 9800 GT, and the DDR3 model sits between an underclocked, "green" version of the GeForce 9600 GT and the 9800 GT. In the older 3DMark06 test, both GT 240 variants slip behind the green 9600 GT at 1920x1200. That doesn't tell us a whole lot about potential game performance, although the 128-bit memory interface presumably puts the DDR3 part at a disadvantage.

IT168 claims Nvidia sent GeForce GT 240 parts to its partners for trials "as early as three weeks ago," so you can probably expect to hear more in the coming weeks.

Why would they bother releasing a NEW DX 10.1 product with DirectX 11 available by the time it becomes available? I know that DX 11 will not be used in applications for a while, but do the people at NVIDIA honestly think that people will buy a DX 10.1 part from them compared to DX 11 parts from AMD/ATI at this point if they are not significantly faster for the money?

They have to figure out how to widget their middleware (and screw over ATI in the process) into a DX11 part first.
