I know loads of people who played HL2 5 years after it's release and didn't see anything innovative about it.

OK let's stop talking about half life 2. This is a hl3 thread. Is this even official? Won't believe it until its straight from Gabe's mouth or ass, either one is acceptable .

I still think the ragdoll tech in Source is still among the best there is, perhaps not THE best any more, but still better than some modern interpretations that I see in some games.

Not seeing the relevance in what you are saying, unless you are just being sarcastic.

Of course no one would see innovation in a game when playing it five years after release.

I played it when it came out and there was nothing innovative about it. Trespasser had the same buggy, unstable type of physics system in 1998. It went even further in sacrificing functional and interesting gameplay for "LOL physics puzzles". It's a big part of what made HL2 so disappointing.

Half-Life 2's physics were not buggy and unstable. They were very solid, and still are among the best today. I just finished the games a couple of days ago.

The physics puzzles in the game were fun. Made for good variety.

Things start mysteriously wobbling, vibrating all the time. Things interpenetrate and get stuck in each other even with small numbers of objects and it happens all the time. Small objects sometimes just pass straight through other objects. Everything feels sort of spongy and not solid.

Physics objects also have the annoying tendency of interacting with player physics in an undesirable way and impeding, hitching or getting the player stuck. In the real world, you'd just walk straight over a little bit of rubbish.

The game was littered with menial tasks not deserving of the title puzzle, which heavily utilized the physics system in various contrived ways. This may have been somewhat reduced in episode 1 and 2(don't know, haven't bothered to play them). The basic weapons, the pistol and the smg, being both low damage and almost unusably innacurate beyond crowbar range, left you with the tedious gravity gun as by far the most useful and most used gun in the game.

Listen, people have blue balls waiting for Half Life 3. So whenever we see a Half Life 3 thread bumped, we get excited for some Half Life 3 news or update to talk about....Not a discussion about how good/bad Half Life 2 was . So please don't tease, go bump a HL2 thread for that discussion please.

Half Life 2 physics were so primitive...you basically just move things and they fell. They didn't particularly stack on top of each other very good either.

The physics aren't up to today's standards but back then when physics were just coming out and becoming a mainstream thing they probably did it the best of the time.

The game came out right when games like UT2K3/4 came out and started using physics. Like I said, compared to today's physics it's nothing special but when it hit it was pretty good.

Sorry but you don't know what you are talking about, valve physics engine is no other but Havok the same engine used on Oblivion and Skyrim and many other new games, stacking has been one of the features that all physics engines show about and havok is very good at it.

Why aren't they up to today's standards? IMO theres nothing special about today physics (if you take out PhysX or any other GPU accelerated physics like liquids and cloth) compared to the Havok engine used on HL2 rigid body physics haven't evolved that much, a box being thrown around on HL2 looks very much like a box being thrown around on any modern game using any other physics engine, btw and has you spoke of the unreal engine 2 their inhouse Karma physics engine was miles behind of what the havok physics engine version used on HL2 could and can do, thats why they replaced it with Havok on UE3 and then later with PhysX.

And has a curiosity the firsts games with advanced rigid body physics (for the time) that i know about was Traspasser (the jurassic park game) followed 6 years later by Severance the blade of Darkness, all the others add basic physics where boxes would be pushed around but not been able to rotate on their on axis.

Traspasser physics:

Severance BOD physics:

This series has stagnated and I have a feeling anything they do for HL3 just won't feel fresh and exciting. But I am more than happy to be wrong. Hey, at least we got to enjoy this series in it's prime, a lot of gamers today will never experience the feeling you got going through HL1 into for the first time - when it felt ground breaking.

I think that steam box contraption was delayed to 2015 so don't expect any news at all until next year - maybe.
