Default Half-Life Alyx: New VR game from Valve

https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/18/...agship-vr-game

My bet is it'll be at least 20 minutes long!

They're obviously just using the Half Life name to sell the Valve Index, which I hope fails.

It's going to be some limited, rail shooter with zero story and 99% tech demo.

If they were serious about a Half Life 3, well they'd actually make a Half Life 3. Or have done so already.

Exactly. If they thought this would live up to expectations, they wouldn't call it Half-Life Alyx.

They'll try to push this as a killer app for index, or else they'll promise that this is a sign that they will be producing alot more content. Basically the episodic thing all over again.

I wouldn't dismiss this as a VR gimmick. I don't think they would create this unless they intend to create a new standard, the same they did with HL2.

Honestly, I haven't seen anything "VR" that isn't a gimmick.

All it gives me is a literal headache. (I have not tried the latest Vive, but pretty much everything else)

Robo Recall is amazing!

So I've heard that Valve has been hanging out with the boneworks guys alot, and there's rumors that they might be sharing some technology.

People said the same thing about valve and steam when hl2 came out. This is going to be THE VR game.

Ouch...sorry man.
Almost all of my gaming is now in VR. DCS, Beatsaber, Golf, Archery, RoboRecall, Superhot, etc.

It's hard for be to play 2D games now, outside of FPS's. (FPS demands it, get super nauseated otherwise)

If anything from Valve is going to make a lot of people more interested in VR than they've already managed with their technology, it's an audacious game in the Half-Life universe. I hope this rekindles both VR as a gaming tool ánd Half-Life as a gaming franchise, though my stone cold heart refuses to forget that tech demos are a thing and can end up being nothing but a footnote in the history books.

i even predicted valves next game would be a VR HL game on the HL3 post.

I do not care for VR. never will. its a fad like 3D movies are.

I agree that it's lame that they didn't ever make a proper HL3, or hell at least just finish things out with HL2 EP3, but why do you want the Valve Index to fail? VR still has a long way to go, but it's a pretty awesome experience and I don't know why anyone would wish it to fail.

Modern Valve clearly can't produce content in any sort of efficient way, so there's no point in even having them tease it.

Gabe said they were working on 3 fully-fledged single player games. This would be the first, so I think this will be more than a 2hr game.

I'll hold judgement for the reveal.

If anyone can elevate VR to more than a gimmick it's Gabe. Fingers crossed he delivers. We've had enough tech demos.

pretty sure the game will work with any steamvr compatable headset, In general they're trying to push vr, not just the valve index.

Hopefully, but we'll find out tomorrow. Ideally, they'll allow the game to be played on any headset, but also include some features that really take advantage of the knuckles controllers.

Otherwise, I'm sure someone from the community will have it up and running on other headsets in no time.

To me, this is a slap in the face. Stop one of the most popular franchises ever on a cliffhanger, ignore fans and refuse to even acknowledge the franchise's existence for over a dozen years, and then sheepishly sidestep everything with a prequel that requires hardware that less than .5% of Steam owners have.

Honestly they should have licensed the Half-Life brand out to another top studio a decade ago. I'd love to see what a studio like Respawn could do with HL3.

Probably a Tomb Raider or Uncharted style game, with a drawn out story, crowbar melee battles, gravity powers, and headcrabs that can't jump straight.
