![]() For those wondering why they're not seeing the update, it supposedly won't install/even be offered if your AV hasn't marked itself compatible by setting a certain registry key. Quote:

We came up with a list of technically correct acronyms: User Address Space Separation, prefix uass_ Forcefully Unmap Complete Kernel With Interrupt Trampolines, prefix ****wit_ but we are politically correct people so we settled for Kernel Page Table Isolation, prefix kpti_ Linus, your call :) |

![]() Insider trading much? So intel knew about this in June, and then he "legally" sells 80% of his holdings just before the news broke. Yeah, that's 100% legit. ![]() Quote:

June 2017 - Google informs Intel of the flaw. October 2017 - Intel's CEO draws up new rules regarding selling stocks / ethical bullshit. In regards to offloading stock if something should happen with the company. November 2017 - Intel's CEO dumps his stock. January 2018 - Mankind is informed of the greatest security flaw of all time. It's was 5 months after they were informed. Would it take 5 months for them to realize the severity of the problem? Possibly, but it would seem far more suspicious if Intel's CEO dumps his stock say in June/July. He's smart waiting those 5 months as to not seem suspicious at the time. It will all come down to what the SEC discovers. I doubt anything will happen.

![]() Good luck with that. Intel's processors work as intended; it's the OS kernel that is using the processor in an insecure manner to boost performance. |

![]() I didn't see the fix in Windows Update on Windows 7, so I had to manually go into my Avira anti-virus software, update it, and then re-check Windows Update to see the January security role-up (KB4056894). The January security role-up patch includes the meltdown fix. Just wanted to share in case anyone else hits the same snag.

![]() Not overly surprising; unless you are frequently hitting kernel functions and thus suffering the pain of the cache miss/reloads the fix requires you aren't going to notice anything negative; in fact you now have more TLA/page cache space for your process which increases the chances of the VA being in the cache to be translated. So pretty much what I said earlier Ż\_(ツ)_/Ż |

![]() We wont know the perf hit until intel releases firmware on the 9th. Its still most likely to hit servers/cloud vs desktops tho.

Imo the mentality from manageament will take them so far.I feel intel this year at least had so many controversial decisions that i wonder how much the public will swallow.I mean KAC will still buy their CPU's but is "only" 400$ and will not save intel ...

![]() Via is partnering with the Chinese government to develop indigenous processors without NSA backdoors. Which means not one shred of originality as the Chinese only steal technology. No way it's faster than existing designs. |

![]() Intel is not exactly known for innovation either. In fact their sloppy implementation of AMD64 looks like it could be responsible for the mess they have themselves in. As for VIA making a competitive processor I'll believe it when it happens. |
