Default WD external drive question

i bought a 3tb WD external drive a while ago. I took the drive out of the case and used it as an internal drive for a while (3.5" WD Green). Now, I have a bunch of data on it.

I want to put the drive back into the enclosure and use it as an external drive again, but I'm having no luck. The drive shows up as "unallocated" in disk management.
if i take the drive out of the case and use it as an internal drive, everything shows up fine again.

anybody come across this problem before?

I think the external drives use encryption. A drive that already has data written to it isn't going to work when you put it back in the enclosure. Likewise if you remove the drive from the enclosure that already has data on it it'll show up as unallocated as well.

if something happens to the circuit board, there goes your data. that's shady as fudge.
