Default GM any better these days?

I'm not in the market right now, but I passed a Pontiac dealership on the way home today and they had either a used G5 or G6 with 30MPG advertised for only several thousand I think. It got me thinking that with my pathetic budget, maybe I should give GM a chance? I've only ever owned Acura, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, and it seems like you sure can get a used GM a lot cheaper.

So is reliability and quality any better in the past few years?

The G series has been out long enough to get one for a few thousand? I thought they'd only been around a couple years.

GM product values drop like a freakin rock. One of the reasons I've been trying to talk the wife out of buying another one.

Foreign = Buy it if you'll trade it.

GM = Buy it if you'll keep it.

Cars aren't an investment, so drive it like you stole it, drive it till it runs into the ground. I'm still trying to kill my 96 lumina, but its not going well. Everything else might fall apart but that motor will keep on running as long as I change oil in it. As long as being the key part

People give GM vehicles a lot of crap and quite a bit of it is truthful, but there are a lot of GM engines out there that are built really well and take a lot of abuse. The rest of the car.....well.....yeah. I'll still never buy a non-domestic truck.

Most of the engines are quite ok, but like you said...the rest of the car is garbage. I can't think of any GM on the market right now that actually has quality interior parts or decent build quality. On some of the cars, the build quality is arguable...but the interiors no way.

So judging by the various posts, it sounds like a no on Pontiac.

Come to think of it, I do recall my brother in law telling me how various interior parts seem to snap off too easily on his Grand Am. The car seems stable otherwise though, and he does about 100 miles a day. He got the car for the same reason I was interested... they're dirty cheap on a used car lot.

BTW, there so way on God's green earth you are going to get GM fuel economy #
s. 30mpg out of a G6....LOL. You'll be lucky to get 25. Opps, the average user gets 24mpg out of the 4banger. (according to www.fueleconomy.gov). The Vibe is about the only thing I'd get out of a GM lot. The engine might last but the brakes and everything around it will rot. Especially if you are in the rust belt.

I don't know about everyone else, but I AM talking about current quality. I rent cars all the time and have driven practically all of them for a week at a time at one point or another. I haven't seen anything at all that might suggest quality is actually improving.

What says to you that it has?

well I work for Ford and I have seen first hand all the improvements made to the Current Focus (i've said it in past threads, Focus currently best quality built car on the market at the moment).. all charts have both Ford and GM climbing at a fast pace and the likes of Toyota falling.. Ford/GM have made great strides in quality over the last few years, they both know this is something they have to do to gain back or hold the market share they currently have.

That might be true, but it certainly doesn't show in the quality of materials used or the way they are put together. Interior quality is a big thing for me...and it definitely is getting worse. Not only that, but this recent trend of slapping cheap plastic aluminum trim on everything has got to stop. It just looks tacky and awful. It's in damn near everything GM makes...Dodge seems to have taken a liking to it also.

GravY Domestic Defender. One man crusader. I've seen no literature to back up your claims other than inital quality. I still don't buy that GM is making any progress. I don't see where they've changed anything to make any. Ford appears to be making an attempt at least, we'll see down the road if actual reliability improves.

I've driven G6, Grand Prix, G5, Malibu, Impala, 300Hemi C, Impreza, Focus, Vue, etc, etc. A wide variety of makes/models and not all domestic. Not all base models either. Various GXP versions here and there and others.

The Focus was an 08', the Malibu I drove maybe a year or more ago. It was probably an 06/07.

well old malibu is made with previous thinking, look at the new one.. also check out the G8..

Focus 08 huh.. did you drive previous versions? Ride/Handling improved, much quieter than previous generation adding sound deadening materials and thicker glass ect, functional dash with Sync option (first vehicle to have sync and it works like a charm). On top of that the Build Quality I talked about all for a price comparable or less than the previous model. I find the interior much better than previous model, if you dont like the brushed alum look I guess that would be preference but it fits the market that its made for. oh and its selling real well too

now what are you comparing these to thats oh so better in class?

Try not to take my comments too seriously. Also Im not really comparing to anything just simply stating whether or not I cared for it. That was the first Focus I have ever driven, but I suppose it was ok. I thought this was about GM?

Last time all of us field guys got together for a meeting one of them had rented G8. That thing was ****ing amazing. Not too bad at all, but wasn't that originally part of Manaro or whatever like the GTO? Whatever GM's Australian division is. I don't really know. I just looked at the interior/exterior...never had the opportunity to drive it.

If you're trying to understand what I think is acceptable interior I would say my buddies 02' Jetta is very nice for around the same price as most of the GM's we've discussed.
