Default After 15 years, the Mars Opportunity rover's mission has ended

"It's time to say goodbye to Opportunity. The Mars rover's team made its last attempt to contact Opportunity on Tuesday night, and it went unanswered. On Wednesday, NASA confirmed that the mission is over."

https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/13/world...rnd/index.html

To the robot who turned 90 days into 15 years of exploration:

You were, and are, the Opportunity of a lifetime.

Rest well, rover. Your mission is complete.

It had an impressive run - Spirit, it's sibling, only lasted to 2010 or so, but still an impressive increase on the mission plan.

Though, Curiosity is still going strong, and a very similar build to Curiosity is going up shortly, I think this year or next, with a different set of instruments and a different location, but nearly the same lander and rover general design (they're actually using some parts built as spares for the Curiosity mission.)

Given their success, I wondered why Curiosity went with radioactive decay instead of solar panels. Apparently Curiosity should get about 12 years out of its power source, so it should be about as long although unlikely to be able to do much in the last few years.

Maybe in the future they might use a hybrid system. Solar panels would be great if it weren't for all the dust.

That's the thing, dust and mars getting a lot less light than the earth, requiring a LOT of panels for a big rover. Curiosity is like, small car sized? So the number of panels required to move it around, even without dust, is massive, so they threw a few hundred watts of nuclear generator on it and called it a day. The warmth from the generator actually helps keep some of the rover's parts warm, which reduces the thermal stresses on them that can damage things.
