I am also really buying a card for Doom 3 and Quake IV. I wonder if the 8500 will be enough for it.

There are also many other factors. If you really want to hold out until Fall 2002 JUST for Doom3 then I would tell you to wait until perhaps a better product comes out like R300 or GF999.

Though, I am more than positive that my R200 will handle it considering I will be upgrading my motherboard/cpu/ram JUST before the release. By then, prices will have dropped so much that 200 dollars can get me a fast enough system. Not only that, but I want the image quality for present games NOW.

I look on my apartmentmate's computer with his Radeon and then I look on my computer with my GF2 GTS 64 and I get jealous!

Generic
Tseng Labs ET4000
Tseng Labs ET6000 and Voodoo (same rig), later i replaced the et6000 for a Matrox Mystique (and YES I KNOW that was the dumbest thing ever !) - but it was because of the 2d quality, you know?
Voodoo2 and Riva TNT (same rig)
gForce2 GTS

...oops, forgot the S3 Verge somewhere in there, dunno where that ****er was, i think between the 4000 and the 6000

starting 1992:

1.)Cirrus Logic (Generic)
2.)Video7 Vega 1MB (!)
3.)Diamond Viper V330 (4MB)+ Typhoon 3D Max VoodooI (4MB)
4.)Voodoo Banshee 16MB
5.)Typhoon Matrix 32MB (GeForce DDR)
6.)ATi Radeon 7500 (hopefully this week)

Wow, now I've got a flashback. Isn't this crazy. About 8 years ago I've upgraded my machine to 8 MB (SIMM) to play "Rise of the Robots" in SVGA on a 486-33MHz, now I have 384MB with a TB1.2, totally crazy!

I've calculated a little bit, to find out that I've invested around $10.000 in computer equipment and games. Although I know, there are lot's of others, who have invested more, it's quiet astonishing !

Well, lets see if I can remember them all without having to come back and edit it later

1) Trident 1MB Vesa card - Really old games, CGA, EGA, VGA ;o

2) Matrox Millennium 2MB PCI (one of the best cards I ever owned IMO) - Heh, more of the same, except SVGA stuff

3) Matrox Mystique 4MB PCI - Destruction Derby 2, Croc 1, and whatever other rare games I could find that would work in 3D mode ;o

4) PowerVR PCX2 4MB PCI - Unreal, GLQuake, Quake 2 and there were a few others too.

5) Voodoo2 12MB PCI (I still have this one) - GLQuake/2 era up until last march

6) Savage 4 32MB PCI - I didn't use this for gaming much since my Voodoo 2 did a better job at almost everything except things that required more than 8MB texture space.

7) Radeon 64MB VIVO AGP - Everything I play now I use this with ~

-Some crappy Mac GFX-Chip (yeah, I was once an Apple fanboy. Well, sort of... )
-ATI RageIIc: Crappy but did its job because 3D was handled by a...
-Voodoo2: My first real 3d-card - it was great
-TNT2: Yeah, I know... nVidia. Not a bad card but had quite a few issues with some games. I would buy a Voodoo3 now if I were in that situation again.
-Voodoo5 5500: A truly GREAT card! I'm still waiting for the chip that delivers better FSAA.

Soon (hopefully):
Radeon 8500
Still waiting for that Bitboys-chip though...

4) Trident 1MB thing that came with my first PC
5) Videologic something-or-other, can't remember the model
6) Matrox Mystique 2MB, later got 2MB upgrade
7) Added Matrox M3D (PowerVR)
8) Swapped both for an ATI Rage Pro 4MB and Creative VoodooII 8MB
9) Swapped both again for Voodoo3 3000
10) Voodoo5 5500
11) Rad 64MB OEM version

1: Tseng ET4000
2: Trident SVGA (1 MB)
3: Diamond Stealth (2MB VRAM)
4: Voodoo 1 (Orchid)
5: Voodoo 2 (Creative Labs)
6: Voodoo 3 (3dfx)
7: Voodoo 5 - returned after two weeks; 3dfx went belly-up

8: Geforce 2 GTS (CL - returned after 1 week; too much $ for too little)

9: Radeon 64 VIVO (right balance of performance and features; crappy driver support)

10: ???

I believe the 8500 will just barely edge out the GF3 Ti500 in both performance and video quality, but the safer bet is the GF3. It has widespread developer support, is practically the same as the X-box chip, and is shipped with more PCs than any other high performance video card.

Hell - Doom3 and Unreal 2 are being developed on a GF3 no doubt, so you know what they will run best on right out of the box.

Default Ahh the Memories

1. Generic ISA
2. Cirrus Logic
3. S3 Virge 4MB PCI
4. Ati Rage Pro 8MB (Bitch to get GLQuake to work)
5. Genoa V-Raptor 4MB PCI (Rendention V2200 w/ TV out)
6. 2 VooDoo 2 12MB SLI
7. VooDoo 3 2000
8. VooDoo 3 3000
9. TNT2 32MB
10. S3 Savage 4
11. Radeon 32MB DDR
12. Radeon VE (used more for business)

Other numerous cards borrowed over the years as well.

I miss the rendention, on a Cyrix 233 (yes Cyrix) with 64MB RAM and the 4MB Rendention, Unreal would run 800X600 at 30+ FPS. Damn nice for the time.

Default Egads!

I don't think I can list all of mine, especially since I was totally computer illiterate when buying my first couple of rigs. Always had a friend go with me to advise.

This thread made me think about all the systems I've owned.

386/SX25 w/4MB of RAM
486/SX33 w/4MB, later upgraded to 8
Pentium 60 w/8MB, later upgraded to 16
Pentium 120 w/16MB and a Hercules Stingray 64 (first video card I specifically bought)
Pentium 166 w/32MB and a Hercules Dynamite 128, later added a Voodoo 1 in Oct. of 1996 (I was one of the first buyers of the Orchid cards)
Pentium2 300 w/64MB, later bought a Voodoo 2
Pentium2 400 w/128MB, later bought a 2nd Voodoo 2 for SLI, which required I remove the old PCI Dynamite 128 and replace it with an AGP Rage card, my first, and only, ATi card. Spring of '99 saw all three cards removed for a Voodoo 3
Pentium3 550 w/128MB, still using a V3
Pentium3 800 w/256MB, had replaced the V3 with a Voodoo 5. Tried both a GF2 Ultra and a GF3 while running the 800Mhz.
Pentium3 1000 w/256MB, still using a V5 but plan on buying a GF3 Ti 200 ASAP.

So I've really run nothing but 3dfx accelerators for the past five years, though I've tried a few boards from the competition. This is probably why I've decided to play it cheap and go with a Ti 200 and hope it overclocks to 200/240-260.

Hehe. Comments, no prob ;-)

I really can't list all of the video cards I have had, because I simply can't remember all of them, but here is few of them:

286/386: S3,PicoVGA etc.
486 S3 Trio32 and 64 with 512kB to 2MB memory.
Diamond Stealth 64 4MB VRAM
Flash3D Voodoo1 (my first real 3D-accelerator).
Diamond Viper V330 Riva128 4MB
Diamond Voodoo2 8MB
PCI Voodoo3 3000 (for older machine)
AGP Diamond Viper V550 TNT 16MB (in "new" machine)
Creative GeForce 32MB SDR
Hercules 4500 Kyro2 64MB
Avalenche3D Dual.. uups.. I didn't say that ;-)

I could give a nice list of processors and different kind combinations I have had, but it would be a long list :-)

My primary machine for now is [email protected] AXIA Tbird, Asus A7V133 and Kyro2.

3- 4Meg Verite V1000
4- Sierra Screaming 3D (8Meg Verite V2200)
5-Creative 3dBlaster (Voodoo2 8meg)
6- Diamond Viper V550 (RivaTNT)
7- Guillemot MaxiGamer (Voodoo2 12meg)
8- Guillemot Xentor32 (RivaTNT2 Ultra)
9- Ati Radeon 64Meg DDR Vivo
10-VisionTek GeForce3 64Meg
11-Radeon 8500 64Meg

I'm returning the Geforce3 in favor of a Radeon8500. I'm not really impressed with the GF3 its nice and fast, but compared to my Radeon the colors are bland and it tears alot during 2D operations.

Well, started off around '91 with an integrated POS video7 video.

starting in 96, went on to newer and better starting with:

Rendition V1000 (sierra screamin 3d)
Riva128 (diamond viper 330)
Voodoo2 (stb)
TnT2 (Diamond Viper 770)
Geforce2 GTS (Creative annihilator)
and the Radeon 8500 that i have ordered will be next.

That will be 6 video cards in 5 years.

Cool Hehe

Ok here goes my list (or an attempt at it).

1. Numerous pieces of crap that were in my 8086's, 286's and 386's not worth mentioning

2. Diamond VLB 4 meg Tseng Labs ET4000 (I think that was the chipset modle, not sure now) in my 486 DX 33.

3. Here is where things started gettting real. I got the original Rendition V1000 video card by Intergraph (they were first to market). This was the first card (that I am aware of) to really do true 3D. Man Quake and Descent looked good on this thing. I was also running a Pentium class machine at this point

4. Canopus 6 meg Voodoo 1 (everyone else was making a 4 meg Voodoo 1). There was no competition to the Voodoo....

5. 2 - Diamond 12 meg Voodoo 2's running in SLI mode (along with a Diamond Viper 330 to serve up my 2D). Of course I had the V2's overclocked!! That setup cost me over $600! just for the video card!!!! So don't complain that fast 3D is now costing $200-$350, I have paid a lot more!!!! I bought all of it as soon as it hit selves and paid damn near full retail.

6. Diamond TNT2 Ultra 32 meg overclocked.

7. Creative Labs Geforce 1 DDR 32 meg overclocked (they were the first 2 market with a GF1 DDR card). I had the sucker practically the day it came out (and paid full f'en retail for it $299 :-(( ).

8. My current card, Inno3D Geforce 2 Ultra 64 meg DDR. A nice card! Got this running on a AMD T-bird 1.33 ghz overclocked to 1.5 ghz. I have the mainboard DDR running at 300 mhz. The GF2 Ultra is O/C as well. It's a good, solid setup ruuing on XP Professional final. This setup gives me no issues and it perfectly stabil and fast. Hopefully my new 8500 will still provide this level of stablility and compatablilty.
