Rise of the Tomb Raider - Discussion Thread

Rise of the Tomb Raider released last month, and all evidence suggests it didn't sell well. It didn't manage to rate on the NPD's top 10 best selling games for November, which tracks the top selling games in the United States (Just Dance 2016 sold better, FYI). It's little wonder: it released the same day as Fallout 4. Perhaps more damningly, it released exclusively for Xbox One, which is lagging behind the PS4 in the install base stakes, not to mention the PC which dwarves both platforms.
So it's unsurprising that the promised PC port is coming sooner than expected. According to an Amazon listing, it's releasing on January 29. That's a more specific date than 'early 2016', which is all we knew before.
That should hopefully boost the game's profile, assuming the port is decent. All reports suggest it's excellent, with our friends at GamesRadar describing it as a "magnificent adventure game" and giving it a near-perfect 4.5 stars.
One of the biggest talking points leading up to its release is that Rise of the Tomb Raider, unlike its predecessor, will have lots of tombs. For some extensive gameplay footage (on Xbox) click through here.

Is it better than the last game or more of the same or worse? From what I remember of the last TR it was an average game; third person shooter with no puzzles and a good pair of tits.

Well the previous TR games had violence too, the sprite kind, but it was still there along with ****ING PUZZLES AND TOMBS AND SHORT SHORTS!

The last one was pretty good IMO.

They made the wrong choice of going with Xbox One for console exclusivity it hurt them in the sales massively especially when most people are playing on PS4 these days. Thats what they get for trying to get extra money and doing a console exclusive. Now they are coming crawling back to PC trying to make up for some of the money they didnt get since they cant sell it on PS4 for another year.

Sad they couldnt crack NPD top 10.

I would like to buy this, I enjoyed TR2013.

But I would also not like to buy this, because I would rather not support a company that uses an exclusive deal at the expense of its consumers.

i really tried hard to enjoy the last one. i wish they toned down the explosions, and the feeling that lara was a ****ing T-1000. overall was enjoyable imo.

cant say im overly pleased of there choice. But, when it comes down to pc ports of there games(I think its nixxes that does there pc work) I have to give them the master race seal of approval.

You remember it right. and this is more of the same from what I hear, since the previous game for some reason got great critic and player reviews, despite being average.

Imagine that.

You release the same day as Fallout 4 and as an Xbone exclusive and you're gonna have a bad time. I hope Squeenix learns from this failed launch and exclusivity bullshit and makes changes in the future. Still on track to pick it up in "Q4 2016" (when the PS4 version launches) on Steam for 5 bucks in the Thanksgiving/Winter sale just to spite them.

This! While the graphic was nice, the complete over-the-top gore was a huge turnoff for me. I also HATED the QTE-sh*t.

So, if the next game is more of the same, then i'll gladly pass.

Normally, I would agree with you 100% but there was a good chance this game wasn't going to get made without MS' deep pockets.

Thankfully for Fallout 4, I can easily wait.

The sort of bad news here is since it is coming so close to the exclusive version, I doubt we will be getting the "special edition" I would expect after making people wait.

The damning part for the bad sales wasn't so much the exclusivity (Xbox One still has over 15 million units out there), but the terrible release date. There were just too many high profile games coming out around the same time (Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Halo 5, COD Blops3, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, etc). This game took a back seat.

I thought this one had more "tomb raiding." I asked in the official thread but I don't believe I got a response from anyone who has been playing it.

IMO, the last game was good. For what it set out to accomplish I'd say it was successful. Maybe wasn't what you'd expect from a Tomb Raider game, but if you enjoyed Uncharted you would have enjoyed Tomb Raider. If this one just expands upon exploration and tomb raiding it should be even better. Shame their marketing decisions proved to be poor.

The new game absolutely has more tomb raiding/puzzle solving parts. I also hear it has some truly amazing set piece moments.

I liked the last one, anyone who would call it awful sounds like the kind of person that can't recognize what a bad game is, like some of the stuff Double Fine put out

I can't wait to get it, shame it got buried in among holiday releases. I wonder if they'll bother trying to put the unusable hair tech in this one.

Really enjoyed the previous one. I wasn't wishing bad sales on the sequel, but if that gets it to PC sooner, then good. They got what was coming to them for that exclusivity crap.

There were just too many high profile games coming out around the same time (Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, Halo 5, COD Blops3, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, etc). This game took a back seat. __________________

Sweetz Radeon Arctic Islands Join Date: Nov 2003 Posts: 5,682	The new game absolutely has more tomb raiding/puzzle solving parts. I also hear it has some truly amazing set piece moments. I liked the last one, anyone who would call it awful sounds like the kind of person that can't recognize what a bad game is, like some of the stuff Double Fine put out I can't wait to get it, shame it got buried in among holiday releases. I wonder if they'll bother trying to put the unusable hair tech in this one.
