Default To smartphone or not to smartphone?

Looks like my old k750i that I've had for nearly 4 years now is giving up at last so I'm looking for a new phone.

Things that are most important for me are:

1. Battery time, mostly talk, but standby as well
2. WiFi, with possibility of voip calls
3. Be able to use MSN messenger every now and than (not that important)

Now if I understand correctly you have to be able to install some software so you can call voip calls and I guess it is easier (more options) to install software on symbian phones.

I've never used symbianOS phone before, so are there any more advantages with it over regular Sony Ericsson phones?

In case I don't need smartphone I thought about this one:
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_c905-2427.php

in case I do need smartphone please give me some recommendations as I don't know nothing about them

Thank you for your time!

Use the HTC Touch Pro for a week and get back to me.

Smartphones are very bleh.... I suggest a PDA phone, something to the tune of the HTC Touch Pro or the new Touch HD.

Windows Mobile allows you to log into MSN Messenger whenever you want and it's integrated into the OS.

The Touch Pro is the best phone money can buy hands down, as long as you take out 25 minutes to flash it with modded firmware.

And a keyboard that stops functioning after a couple months and a sketchy OS that is 100X slower online than my Blackberrry.

Maybe I am biased but I am on Blackberry #3 and I love them -- not a fan of touch phones because they would get destroyed in my line of work.

I have had a couple world editions and now a curve, great phones.

^Have you ever used a Touch Pro? I've had four HTC phones to date. Ttwo were a bit sluggish, I'll give you that (T-Mobile Wing and Sprint Mogul) but the AT&T Tilt and the Sprint Touch Pro are nice and speedy. The Touch Pro in particular.

Also, I've gotten upto 2.3mpbs on my phone so I'm not sure what you mean by slower online

I don't think Blackberries are bad phones, but thats what they are. Phones. They can't do much other than email and phone calls very well. I suppose if thats all you need, by all means, but I definitely need a lot more than just that. I use my phone for every PC function you can think of, with the exception of producing music

I Blackberry Storm, I is a great phone with the best reception that I have had in a long time. Multimedia play back is great, large bright screen, it actually has replaced my Ipod touch for my carry around mp3 player on the mountain bike and the jeep. The games are trickling out right now, nothing like the Iphone. As for software the Garmin GPS software is one the best investments for a one time charge, plus MSN messenger, yahoo messenger and google messenger installed out of the box.

Downside, no wifi and you have to get the data plan. Only thing I have to say to this is you have internet everywhere you have a signal and you dont have to worry if there is a open wifi around you.

It is a Blackberry for non Blackberry users.

I've been really happy with my HTC Touch Pro. Best WinMo phone I've used and I came from an HTC Mogul.

Of course I'm probably just biased...

I say don't go with the smart phone. I don't know about where you are, but here in MB you pay like 2x as much for a smart phone with a data plan (vs. regular mobile). However, we prob have the the most expensive rates in the world.

I got a 'student deal' that came with unlimited web-browsing which is pretty awesome if you get the Opera Mini Browser. You can do w/e you want on facebook and can prob check your email with it.

I haven't really tried a qwerty keybo on a phone but I see no need for the complexity it adds. T9-word allows me to text and even enter text on the web fast enough.

If you want to be able to browse the web to its full potential on your phone go for a smart phone. If you want a phone with limited, but decent web-browsing abilities go with a regular mobile phone. I like flip phones .

I have the Mogul as my personal phone and I agree its sluggish, I have the 8525 for work and i've also used the TILT and a few blackberries and I always find myself going back to the HTC devices. I've had more issues with the blackberries I've deployed to my employees then the friggin iPhones. Everytime we need more PDA phones I always order HTC Devices. Some of them are made pretty crappy (the TILT is legitimate garbage) but the Touch series are very solid phones. My boss has the AT&T version of the Touch Pro and it's an amazing device and he's always raving how much better it is then his TILT and iPhone 2g & 3g.

HTC all the way!

I have a iPhone running with T-Mobile. It's jailbroken and unlocked (obviously) and just all around awesomeness. iPhone gets my vote.

Battery Time is great- I can use the iPod for 12 hours straight, standby can go forever it seems and wifi eats the battery after about 4 hours straight (I am guessing- it's hard to say because I have never used it on wifi for more than a 1/2 hour or so)

I use mine with MSN messenger using MobileLinked

Sipgate.com is a free service that lets you use 110 minutes of free VOIP calling. I have signed up for it but have yet to use it.

Now, I got my iPhone free from my wonderful niece who didn't want it anymore (she couldn't afford AT&T anymore and isn't much into hacking/unlocking her hardware) so the price was right for me. If you do not have AT&T and don't want to switch to their plan, you'd have to find a used iPhone to buy to use with your provider. But IIRC only AT&T and T-Mobile wotk with an iPhone- Correct Me If I Am Wrong!

The Mogul is nearly unuseable out of the box, but after flashing it with custom stuff it was pretty snappy. However, even after that, its relatively slow compared to a custom Touch Pro.

The Touch Pro does everything right. There's nothing more to be desired from the thing

Oh wait, there is ONE thing! I can't get it to serve directly as a bluetooth storage device

Interesting. If not for the bugs, it would be the only Blackberry that I approve of

How much is that thing?

I've had quite a bit of experience with smartphones.

So far I have used and configured Iphones, a number of different Blackberries, the Windows based Apache, Palms + a few others.

about 4-5 months back I got an N95 for my job, I didn't warm to it much, it was cool enough for me to buy my own one once I quit my job, and now that I have my own one I have fiddled with it way more and found it to be the best damn phone I have ever used.

Apart from the voice recognition, everything works great, I get email on it, can surf the net, watch TV/movies, it makes a good MP3 player, GPS is great, mobile office is pretty good, it has a pdf reader, I'm downloading Skype and MSN right now, and the Nokia PC suite is free and fantastic.

I have an exchange server and it integrates with that very well, but if you don't have an exchange server to link up to, the PC suite is just as good (the only draw back is not being able to sync mailbox through the internet).

Once you get used to it, texting or emailing on a number pad is actually not bad, you can also use the PC suite to type out txts, and connect your phone to a bluetooth KB.

My favorite feature is being able to play Quake and Doom, but I'm sure other phones do that too.

I'd have to recommend Symbian phones, I just love mine to bits.
