Becareful with which Strix you pick up because there are 4 variants floating around:

Asus Strix 1080
Asus Strix 1080G ( Gamer )
Asus Strix 1080OG ( slightly higher clock then the Gamer )
Asus Strix 1080 OC ( Highest clocked out of all 1080Ti variants from any AIB )

The airflow within the case will determine the boost clock, it will boost higher then advertised depending on your case. This goes for all AIB's.

From guru 3d reviews of the respective cards:

Strix:

Gaming-X:

Strix: Noise in Dba

Gaming-X: Noise in Dba

So really the performance and noise between the two is negligible, and probably just comes down to the lottery on how well the one you get overclocks, and if you get coil whine.

Personally, i think if you are getting a 1080ti just go with whatever strikes a balance between what looks cool to you and price. Spending more on these cards seems to net you very little if anything at all.

Hmm... I completely forgot about fan noise. My 1080's are whisper quiet the majority of the time when SLI works, because they don't need to work that hard between two cards to maintain 60fps at 4k.

A single 1080Ti might give me 60fps at 4k for games that don't support SLI, but it might be working hard to get there.

How is the fan noise compared to 980Ti's? My 980Ti's were loud as **** when the fans ramped up, I remembering them annoying the **** out of me when trying to play Witcher 3, before upgrading to the 1080's.

A single 980 ti is 37 decibels idle, 41 decibels full load.
1080ti gamingx is 30 decibels idle and 38 full load.

Yeah custom 1080ti's are very quiet even at full load.

Don't forget that is a logarithmic scale:

For instance going from zero: 40 represents 10,000 and 30 represents a 1000, 20 represents 100, etc.... So the audible difference between 38 and 41 is pretty big.

TL;DR Custom 1080ti's are about as loud at full load as the reference 980ti was idle.

Also reference 1080 SLI is roughly 43 decibels under full load.

There's also the fact that Asus has a reputation for terrible RMA satisfaction

emailed Asus got a RMA shipped it to them for 15 bucks for 3 day and got a brand new 390x dcii back in two weeks

I was more than satisfied

and that was the first asus ROG card to go bad out of my last 14 cards
and not had a ROG MB go bad in 10+ years

Personally I've never had to RMA a video card, I'm just saying that Asus has a reputation of bad service

I imagine you could just google "asus rma horror story". That said, I'm sure every company has their fair share.

I had the MSI 1080 Ti gaming X. Clocked worse. Had higher noise. Worse aesthetics and just all around terrible experience. Very similar to my 980 Ti Gaming X.

Never buying another gaming X again.

Yeah with any card you can get one that doesn't clock as high or has coil whine. There are Strix out there with bad coil whine (Just google 1080ti strix coil whine) that don't overclock well either. Anyway, I am sure you are much happier now that you have a "good" over clocker and have that extra 1 fps.

It was pretty funny reading your posts where you stress because you couldn't get some random number overclocking or in some bench, then you get a new card and get that marginally higher number and instantly got happy. We all get that way from time to time.

Well just joined the 1080 ti crowd, figured I would throw up my Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 up on eBay last night and see how long it would take to go, sold it in about 3 hours for $410. Just slightly under what I paid for it over a year ago. Picked up an EVGA GTX 1080 Ti SC Black Edition for $675 open box from Microcenter. Figured it would solve most games running at 4K on my 4k TV.

Thanks, hopefully I wont get burnt on the open box but wanted to knock the price down on these expensive cards. The plus is I bought it local and can just return it if there is an issue.
