Default ATI Technologies Unwraps RADEON 9550

X-bit labs has reported that ATI will be releasing a new low cost DirectX 9 card solution called the 9550 but based on RV350/RV360 instead of the R300 that the 9500 was. Misleading to the crowd that knows all about the specifications, but to the average joe it probably won't make a difference. This is a similar situation to the labelling of the Radeon 9000 core. Again reasons being the same They did a great analysis job on it so I would go check it out.
ATI’s RADEON 9550 is down-clocked RADEON 9600 featuring 128MB of DDR SDRAM memory with 128-bit bus, Chinese web-site HardSpell.com believes. Graphics cards based on the RADEON 9550 will work at 250MHz/400MHz speeds for chip/memory, 75MHz below core clock-speed provided by the RADEON 9600. Additionally, ATI may roll-out a version of the RADEON 9550 with 64-bit bus. Sources assume that the price of the RADEON 9550 that is expected to be formally announced in early April will be in the range of $70 - $85.

All graphics cards based on the RADEON 9550 and RADEON 9600-series VPUs are based on processors code-named RV350 and RV360. From architectural stand-point these two chips are same and feature 4 pixel and 2 vertex pipelines, but the RV360 is made using more advanced 0.13 micron low-k fabrication technology.

So I guess that the 9550, running at 250mhz, does not even need a heatsink?

But I got to say that, I am not too happy about the looks of the 9550se. I guess they will sell these at $80 CDN or so.

Then again, the 9550 series is not really about performance. It is about being low cost.

Does ATi think that all people are idiots or what? There should be really some serious fines for making such sick products I like ATi very much but I think that someone should really "sit down" on them for this

This sounds to me like they are replacing the 9200 series. The 9200 series is only DX8 afterall. Isn't there a 64-bit memory version of the 9200? This 9550 series will probably put all 9000, 9100, 9200 series on the discontinued products list, except for maybe the AIWs.

Imagine this situation...
You are a typical computer user who don't know anything about graphics cards and you want to buy new graphics card. You go to the shop and see for example Radeon 9500Pro, Radeon 9550 or Radeon 9600Pro. Which card will you choose? At least 9550, right? You know, 9500 is less than 9600 and even 9550 so why you should buy 9500. And this is not good because you bought a card (with a "longer"... ups, sorry bigger number in it's name) which isn't better than old Radeon 9500Pro. So you were cheated by "magic of digits" and this is really wrong. Unfortunately, every company use this cheap marketing grip It's really unfair! Why they didn't call Radeon 9550 for example Radeon 9400? Why they didn't call Radeon 9600 for example Radeon 9450? They didn't do that only because they wanted to cheat as many future clients as they could. And that's why someone should finally "sit down" on them!
I would really don't mind making new "castrates" by them if they stopped calling worse cards with bigger numbers. Personally, I think that this "new" Radeon 9550 should be called in worst case Radeon 9499 and it would be fine.

Default Horrible Numering/Naming scheme

I'd have to agree.

Look at the following situation:

Radeon 9500 PRO, Radeon 9550, Radeon 9600

Which is the fastest performer? The 9500 Pro. Then the 9600 (regular), and the 9550 is the slowest.

It just me of this completely out of whack?

The 9500 Pro has not existed in retail for more than a year now. The odds of Joe Blow $100 video card buyer seeing one on a store shelf are practically null, and even if he did it would cost more than a 9600 XT.

I should imagine that a 9550 will perform at a level between a 9500 non-Pro and a 9600 though.

People that are more serious about purchacing computer hardware, will read up on the subject and hardwares available before choosing..

The average consumer that is merely interested in cost, and staying more current with hardware probably could careless of core/ram speeds, and performance..

Why should it matter that much?? People do research when buying a car.. Why not just do the research on computer hardware, then you wouldnt have to worry about the "confusing numbers?" Yanno..

Dont worry about it.. ATI will make their money, and honestly, doesnt sound to me like they are trying to fool anyone..

the 9500 is discontinued and isn't being made any more. ATI Downgraded the 9700 and sold it as 9500 and it turned out that people were modding the low cost 9500 and turning them into low end 9700. unfortunitly for there reputation and pocket book, they discontinued the 9500 and made the 9600 which runs in some cases better then the 9500. the 9550 is just going to be a low end solution. there are alot of users who want the functionality of DX9 but the only game they play is solitare. this card is perfect in there lineup, great for businesses, word processing machines, and for the average high school kid who would surf the internet then play games. it will also probubly be faster then an nvidia 5200.
