same 9.5/10 movie - 2 for the end

Cameron's version of the movie was said to be 3hrs long. Movie theaters hate that so they brought Rodriguez in to gut it by a third. Maybe we can hope for a longer cut on bluray. Stretch that opening by 20-30 min then we can start getting into fights. As it is its almost basically fighting from beginning to end.

Its got sequelitis but if I dont care for the characters like Alita's BF it falls off more than just a cliff. Budget for this is huge for an old manga... time will tell if it'll make enough money to warrant a sequel.

I give that ending 2-10 as well. The middle 8-10 and the beginning 2-10.

Totally blown away by the animation. Alita looked so damn good. I want more of this movie now!

Trivia
The manga series is titled "Battle Angel Alita," but the movie is titled Alita: Battle Angel (2019). In 2010, producer Jon Landau commented, "I'm telling people that we have to call it 'Alita: Battle Angel,' because Jim (James Cameron) only does T&A movies." Most of James Cameron's movie titles begin with the letter "A" or "T," such as Titanic (1997), Aliens (1986), The Terminator (1984), The Abyss (1989), True Lies (1994), and Avatar (2009).

Saw the movie Sunday and enjoyed it. Was a big fan of the manga back in the day. Glad they did not go with the while eating the brains thing. Still the editing was so fast I am sure many people missed a lot of the darkness of Alita's world, or at least did not take the time to let it sink in before the next distraction took their mind off it. Killing things off screen was an interesting choice as well.

All in all I need to see it again to see the things that happed so fast and all the pretty pretty effects. This movie begs for a directors 4k HDR release. Also this was originally going to be 3 movies so that ending was really just the beginning. Ed Norton showing his face so we could see the true face of evil that our Angel is going to kill in the next episode. Sadly with Disney taking over that will never happen. Also I have not seen the numbers but is this movie selling enough tickets? The subject matter does not seem to cater enough to modern wimps, it had to much good vs evil and stepping up to do the right thing.

It's been showing at a couple theaters near me for about 2 weeks now and there were still so many people going to all the theaters Friday night that we elected to see it Saturday at 1 rather than sit in a full theater. To add a little more perspective, I have at least 19 theaters within 15 miles of me. I think its doing pretty well.

I think the second movie will have more of the grit from the manga.

But the ending in this, was just awful. There is no ending. And that's risky given the type of movie to very likely not have a sequal unless it does really well. Which thankfully it's on pace to do so. But what a cash grab to force a sequel. They try to force a sequal by just literaly stopping the movie with a trailer for the 2nd movie. And so much was not explained about Mars. Just half way through the movie it just drops it in with no backstory or explanation. A battle on the moon? We just "forgot" about it? For as long as it was, I feel it focused on the wrong aspects. To try and get a sequal they should of spent at least the first quater of the movie explaining the battle, and whats going on in the back end. Why Zolum is left, etc.

Also the double death of that particular person was good, but grossly rushed. And that character was as dull as a potato.

EDIT*** Not saying the movie was bad, I went in with low expacations due to history shows us that Manga/Anime transitions usually do. But I was impressed, I just feel a lot of opportunity was missed.

I haven't read the Manga but I think it turned out good. The problem with Anime/Manga transition is the movie format concise details. The movie budget is very high so I hope they made enough to justify a sequel.

Saw the movie... was actually fairly impressed... James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez really took care on this one... even if there are slight differences to the manga and anime, it was pretty cool... the problem of course is that based on looks, the movie does not seem interesting because of the character having the big eyes... but other than that... the fantasy aspects were cool.
