Default Best way to file taxes?

I've always filed my taxes using Turbotax and it has worked out ok for me, but I've been wondering if I could get more money back if I use a former IRS agent as my tax person. I've heard from several friends and family that using those people gives you the best results, but I'm not sure considering they have families and I'm technically single (even though I've lived with my g/f for almost 6 years). I'm hesitant to try because if I am wrong and I get the same with a tax person as I would with turbotax, then I could be minus a couple hundred for no good reason.

Unless you have a complicated tax return, TurboTax will get you back about what you can expect.

As Mahjik said, unless you have complicated taxes, lots of deductions, house, rentals, business.. turbo tax will get you back the same, and not cost you the extra money the tax professional would, specially since you are single. Besides, there are many of them that just use professional license turbo tax or similar software, and they just enter the info just as you would do yourself with turbo tax. Most people that need more than Turbo tax are those that own businesses and need to ensure they deduct every possible thing possible which also includes part of your home costs if you do any work towards your business at home. As well as looking for tax shelters, and alternate ways to claim deductions thru loop holes and such, all perfectly legal, but not normal options most people would never know about.

I used turbotax until we started a business. After that, got an accountant who will handle our taxes because I don't want to mess that up.

One big rule of thumb: Get a CPA, NOT a tax prep person. CPA Only. The certification mean if they mess up, it's on THEM not on YOU.
(I know someone personally who trusted a tax prep "accountant" who was not a CPA to handle things for years, and then learned they had been underpaying for years... it's sorted out now, but the fines pretty much doubled what they owed, not to mention the stress of it all)

Better yet, if you don't use TurboTax go to H&R Block. My wife still works there so I could use a good bonus coming to the household.

I know H&R block has a free mode too. Is it better than turbotax? if so, how?

I haven't seen it in years, but I would say they are about equal. For small returns, you can't really go wrong with either one. In the past, TurboTax had a little better information gathering workflow (asking the tax payer specific questions to help fill out the tax information) but believe that gap has closed over the years.

I used H&R Block for a long time, and now I use TurboTax. I've found one to be as good as the other.
