Request:Mind Map software

Does anyone know of a good mind mapping app?

I'm using freemind at the moment, but I know used a vastly superior one in uni but can't remember what it was for the life of me.

It's not bad at all. It has all the keyboard shortcut controls you'd expect and the display is decent. On the downside it has surprisingly high resource usage and it puts useless 'addons' into your browser, outlook, etc. It's actually very similar to the (great) one I used in uni, and better than any of the other ones I've looked at so far, but unfortunately at €20 a month it's a little too rich for my tastes.

Mind maps are great, you can use them for almost anything. I use them for test analysis and it makes a huge difference.

i've heard good things about mindgenius so that might be an alternative. from what my friends tell me it's what they used in British Universities.

Isn't there a more generic name for this type of chart? In fact most flow-chart software should handle this as well.

Most of the apps just call it a Brainstorming Diagram (like Visio). My Enterprise Architect tool simply calls it "Mind Mapping".

MindManager from MindJet is the best one I've used, but it's gotten too expensive over the years. It used to be extremely cheap many years ago. I just use FreeMind as it does what I need it to do and doesn't require everyone who needs to contribute to the map to pay for a license.

You are correct, it's not subscription based. However, it seems quite pricey if you only plan to use it for mind mapping. If you take advantage of their project management capabilities, the price is probably pretty good.
