after reading various mags and benchmarks, ive come to the conclusion that fps are becoming increasinly irrelevant. Anything above 30fps is playable, above 60 is smooth, and above your moniotors refresh rate is overkill?

So why are we all so hard on our wallets?

85hz is plenty, as is 60fps, but we need triple buffering so we can turn Vsync on without stuttering.

By the way - the mods have rules that say you should not post the same question in more than one place. Just so you know. That way you can avoid making them angry and getting them to ban you or what not.

what does Vsync do anyways? Is it good to have on or off?

vsync stands for 'vertical syncronization' so all it does is syncs your frame rate to the refresh rate of your monitor. What's the point of this? if you have a refresh rate of 60Hz, and you are getting 150 frames per second, some data won't be displayed, so you will get say the first frame being shown, and by half way down the screen on one 'refresh' your video card has allready rendered 5 or so more frames, making it look 'torn' from the previous frame.

Vsync off if you're doing benchmarking, turn on when you're just playing games.

I guess so that we can run at least 1600x1200x32 with 16XAF and 6xAA and still get 60fps althuogh I want 85fps to match my refresh rate of 85Hz

Because tomorrow's games are going to need more power than yesterday's graphics cards supply. Given the choice, I'll gladly take a card that's ridiculously fast in today's games over a card that's just good enough, because I'll save money in the long run by not buying a card that's just good enough every time a new game requires it.

Yes, but tomorrow's games keep getting delayed and those of us who shelled out the money months ago for new cards have to be forced to play the waiting game. I've been sitting here twiddling my thumbs playing bf1942 and MOHAA waiting for HL2 to finally get here so I can actually use my 9800

The key for me is minimum framerate. You're right, who cares if the card can pull off triple digit framerates. But what I want is for that minimum to NEVER drop below 30.

That is why I dropped the big ones for the aiw9700pro when it first became available. That's why to this day, I'm still more than satisfied with this card. And I will not drop big money again till the R420 variation of the aiw series. Dual displays on the high end should be a reality by then.

And with the money I've saved by skipping a cycle, the upgrade won't hurt that much, if not at all.

Anywas back to the topic. What are you talking about? It means a world of differents. I mean, I felt so good seeing my buddies running a game at 220 FPS and I run it at 240FPS. I can laugh at them all day.

human eye can see to picture in blackroom projected on paper up to 1/300 of second (so for n00bs 300fps)

also on You digital "feeling" is high importance on monitor Vertical synchronization (e.g. for my eye anything under 100Hz for CRT monutirs is problem and less than 85Hz terrible , for TFT/LCD/PLASMA etc i need 75 ...) so higher is better

...summary

100fps, synchronized, no spikes, no drops, no slowdowns, no stutter , 100Hz screen and You definitely GET NO HEADACHE

now set this to 300 and u are in wonderland ...

maybe, but for me thats total overkill. most tvs run at 50fps (50hz) and thats perfectly smooth. in my opinion you only need 300fps if you are some sort of first person shooter demi-god. which, i doubt you are, troll. and lets face it when playing on line we are limited by our connection anyway.

And i can also add mouse or joystick refresh rate as another paramenter, if ya get mouse with 300 or 600 updates per second then higher fps gives you better smooth result in control ...

Also sorry i use only displays and TVs with ~100Hz and i know lot of others who do same.

And most of qualite servers got theirs server tick updaterate increased, but that depends if admin know what he is doing

I believe that, until we are capable of running every game with 10xAA and 20xAF @ 1600x1200 with a constant 100FPS, new video cards shall be released and boughten!
